Do you look at religious people as weak minded?
    #9864697 -

This question applies to Atheists  and/or agnostics.  I don't want a debate; or a long, drawn out, 20 page long argument; I just want you to answer the yes or no question.
If you discover someone to be religious, does you perception of their intelligence get lowered?
You may choose only one

I'm guilty myself.  I'm an atheist and when someone discloses their religious beliefs I immediately look at them as a weak minded person that places their life in the hands of an imaginary man in the sky, and it makes me see them as mentally weaker person.   I'm not proud of this but I can't help it.  I was taught as a kid that fairy tales are fake, so when a grown man babbles about jesus and gods and blah blah blah I lose a lot of respect for that person.

No. Religious conviction alone does not stupefy: I've met hordes of intelligent people who happen to be devoutly religious.

Not all religions are illogical, either.

Religious in general?  No.  But if they are a biblical literalist or a young earth creationist then yes.

I choose no for the poll.

'Atheist' implies a firm belief in the non-existence of all deities. It can not be proven that deities do not exist, so assuming as much is highly illogical.

I should assume that you are weak minded. Snap judgments are usually correct, no?

Yeah I had a physics teacher in my senior year of high school that was absolutely brilliant.  I sucked at physics really hard.  I understood the theory completely but the math was impossible for me to wrap my mind around.  It boggled my mind that such a brilliant scientific mind like his could be held back by a hardcore religious belief, and I just lost a lot of respect for him.  I don't know what it is, but it disappoints me.  I don't want to think less of people simply because of their beliefs.  :frown:

It really depends on how they carry their religion. Some people are fucking assclowns about it, but some people use it very genuinely as a source of inspiration and personal strength.

I judge the guy who guarantees me I'm going to hell because I don't pray to Jesus before dinner every night.

Yeah I see what you mean.  I brought this up because I got into a deep conversation with a coworker of mine about life, religion, etc..  He said he was raised catholic and all, and believes there's SOMETHING out there but he's not really too sure what.  Even though he's religious he still had a lot of the same questions I do and it was really refreshing to be able to communicate to someone that believes in god on that level.  Now THAT I can respect.  I just hate it when I meet someone who's really cool, especially a female love interest, then they bring out the jesus guns and I just feel this sinking feeling in my stomach like, "Dammit, they're looney."

By weak minded, I don't mean stupid, or unintelligent, I just mean that they take the easy way out in the game of life.  Problems?  Blame it on god.  Need something in life? Ask god for it.  If it doesn't come true, "Oh well, it's god's plan."  If it DOES come true, "God made an exception for me and changed his plan."

Sometimes it can be used as an escape, sure, but I think at its best religion can really save a person. You see so many people suddenly "finding Jesus" in the midst of a highly destructive addiction simply because once you've truly hit rock bottom, the church is a place where you can find unconditional comfort and moral support in getting your life together again, even if you've totally alienated all your friends and loved ones. Jesus forgives all, and to some people that means a lot.

Religion does not always serve this purpose, in fact quite often it does not, but I think it's beautiful when it does, and the church is a very important part of a community. It should be a moral safety net and a place of communal bonding. It's a major failure of Western values that this is so hard to see amid all the squabbling over semantics and dogmatic interpretations of fairy tales and other such empty-calorie garbage that seems to dominate the discussion.

I voted yes, but i kind of see religion as something you grow out of, like santa claus and the tooth fairy. thats how it was in my personal experience, as i grew older and started to open my mind, i questioned various religions and found it is the common message which is important, not the little details people tend to get caught up in.

  Seconded.  I also view atheism, philosophy, and science in the same light.
