Re: USA Swimming suspends Phelps for 3 months [Re: teaparty]

And the last Gallup poll said 72% of Americans don't think weed should be legalized.
What poll are you referring to? You realize polls are potentially the most inaccurate measuring stick of a topic, right?

We can throw stats at each other all night, but I've met plenty of people on a college campus who think Phelps is an idiot for what he did.

oh i agree it was dumb of him to do. i just think that public opinion is much more accepting of pot than the political culture.

Well, one begets the other.
I think a ton of people have a jaded view of what the population as a whole feels about weed.

He should have said, "Look, I'm a responsible pothead!  I'm not a couch potato, I don't hurt people, and I brought my country to #1 in the Olympics!  What's the problem here?  Now please excuse me, I have to go smoke a bowl and train."

It's sad that Michael Phelps, of all people, cannot enjoy some recreational pot smoking.  What a sorry god damn state America is in.

He should have said that but that's obviously a pipe dream.

Nobody in the public eye who needs to uphold some sort of reputation would ever condone it even though they know that's the right thing to do.

"Look at me! I'm the shit at swimming!!! Weed does fuck all to me! It doesn't help me swim it helps me relax! Get that sand out of your vag and have a smoke!".

I believe that if he had said "Look, I'm a responsible pothead!  I'm not a couch potato, I don't hurt people, and I brought my country to #1 in the Olympics!  What's the problem here?  Now please excuse me, I have to go smoke a bowl and train."

That within 6 months people would have forgotten about this and he would have lost a couple of sponsors and gained a couple of sponsors.

But in the long run it would have been better for the marijuana cause IMO

He has already made enough money to support himself for the rest of his life

Why not man up and make a stand for what he believes in?

All his managers and people behind him and whatever obviously said it would ruin him and would taint his name forever and shit.

I think just the mere fact HE got caught is a boost to the cause.
