Middle Schooler Charged With Possessing Marijuana

(Lexington County) - A student at Pleasant Hill Middle School has been charged with possessing marijuana and illegally possessing cigarettes.

The incident happened Monday.

Deputies say around 11 a.m., a student told a school administrator that she had seen a 12-year-old girl with a bag of marijuana while on a school bus earlier that morning. Administrators say when they confronted the girl about the items, she told them they were in her backpack. The school resource officer then charged the girl and seized the items.

The girl was released to the custody of her mother.

Lexington School District One released the following statement:

On Monday, October 30, 2006, a student reported that another student had what looked like drugs on campus. Based on these claims, the administrative staff and the School Resource Officer immediately began a thorough investigation. That investigation found that a 12-year-old sixth-grade Pleasant Hill Middle School student did have cigarettes and a small amount of a green leafy substance that appeared to be marijuana in her possession.

Acting in accordance with Board Policy and district procedure, administrators at Pleasant Hill Middle School contacted the student's parents/guardians, suspended the student and referred her to Lexington/Richland Alcohol and Drug Abuse Commission's School Intervention Program.

At the same time and as part of the internal investigation, the principal filed an incident report with the Lexington County Sheriff's Department through the School's Resource Officer. The SRO arrested the student, charged her with simple possession and released her to the custody of her parents. This is standard operating procedure.

Although administrators have suspended the student, because of this student's individual circumstances there will be an additional step in the process while she waits for an expulsion hearing with the district's hearing officer.

The Lexington County Sheriff's Department is investigating the allegations and we have been working closely with law enforcement officials regarding this matter.

The district takes any incident like this very seriously. At the beginning of each school year, students and staff go over the rules and regulations of the district. This training includes information about the rules concerning the possession, sale, distribution, transfer or use (in any amount) of alcohol, marijuana, hallucinogenic drugs or any other controlled substance (including look-alike drugs) on school grounds or at any school-sponsored events whether on or off the school grounds. Each student received a copy of the Student/Parent Handbook at the beginning of the school year. Copies of all Lexington County School District One policies are also available on the district's Web site at www.lexington1.net.

Our primary concern is always the health and safety of our students and we are working closely with Lexington County Sheriff's Department officials.

Doesn't sound like she had very much anyway.

Either way, my personal opinion is that 12 year old little girls don't need to be smoking pot anyway.

Of course, if you do smoke pot at 12, it sure does suck getting busted at 12.

Shit, I got caught with a dime on me in school @ 13.  Does that mean that I would have been on the shroomery if it was around then?

What I wouldn't give to know who the little priss was that ratted me out.  Kids at that age are stupid still though.  They don't understand how harmless a little grass is (Thanks for the propaganda D.A.R.E. :mad2:).  So naturally half of the kids this age are gonna totally bitch up and run frantically to the nearest long-legger as if it was plastique or something.

Why must we miseducate our youth???

Persecuted by the system. No one deserves to be arrested for marijuana, less likely a twelve year old!

A child with any mind altering substance at that age is nothing but a product of bad parenting.

I dont care how pro drug you are, there is no reason for someone that age to be in posession, especially on school grounds.

Well I'm gonna have to disagree with you about the "bad parenting". I tried smoking pot for the first time at 12 and started smoking semi-regularly a year later. That's not to say that I have "bad parents". In fact, I have great parents and couldn't ask for better. There's a lot of factors that could possibly lead a kid to smoking pot at a young age. You can't blame it entirely on the parents. There's only so much that parents can do and it's not like they can be everywhere their children are at all times. My parents did talk to me about drugs and all of that. Is it their fault that I only listened so much?

I do, however, agree that 12 or 13 is too young for kids to be smoking pot but there's nothing I can do to change my past.

Yeah, my parents did everything they could to raise me on "good" values about drugs/sex/religion etc.  They were great parents.

They were unhappy to hear about my drug usage, sexual activity, and my questioning of religions in high school but now have grown to accept it.  They see I'm still a intelligent and mature person that just has different interests than them

I wouldn't let my child smoke marijuana at that early of an age.  They are far from maturity.

i started when i was 9, bitches!

not trying to brag or anything, but that is when my curiosity was at it's highest. i didn't start on the semi-regular thing until i was about 13-14. and it's not my parents fault. it is nobody's fault. when something happens you can't get mad about it, you just have to move on. i think if you are curious, no one should stop you. everyone should have the choice, no, the freedom to try what they want, when they want.

everyone should have parents that tell them the truth. not dumb-asses that lie about drugs being bad, sex being bad, church and god being the best.

when you raise children, you can't shelter them. you have to let them make their own decisions. if a kid keeps going for the burner, let them find out what heat induced pain feels like.

my parents never hid drugs from me or fed me lies about religion. i see my self at an advantage over people who have to overcome the lies they were fed as children by their misguided parents.

i know this family, the parents smoke around/with his kids. they have one who is about 3-4, i think. they tell him that pot is what grown-ups do to relax and feel good. they also tells him that he is too young and when he gets older he can try it if he likes. the kid doesn't even want to. his older brother, my friend, started when he was like 13 and says he knew he was to young before that. no one in this family is damaged in any way because of the pot.

but, they are all much more informed when it comes to drug use/safty LEO avoidence, and the state of the world as it is.
