Hair color question
    #9634992 -

Why is it that Caucasians have many different hair colors
While Asians, Africans, Mexicans, Indians and other races generally only have black

Black hair is a dominant genetic characteristic, like brown eyes. It usually wins.

Don't you remember Pundant squares from back in school?

i have noticed that, i have no idea why. from what i remember of pundit squares, some would still show the recessed traits. I dont know of many if any caucasians with black hair, only dark brown.

What about eye color?

my guess is that lighter hair types came from lack of sun after we went north out of Africa

just a guess i have no idea.

I have thought about that too
But China and Russia are virtually side by side

Why didn't the Chinese develop different hair colors

Lighter hair colors occur naturally in Europeans, and less frequently in other ethnicities.[16] In certain European populations, the occurrence of blonde hair is very frequent. The hair color gene MC1R has at least seven variants in Europe and the continent has an unusually wide range of hair and eye shades. Based on recent genetic information carried out at three Japanese universities, the date of the genetic mutation that resulted in blonde hair in Europe has been isolated to about 11,000 years ago during the last ice age. Before then, Europeans mostly had darker hair and eyes, which is predominant in the rest of the world.[16]
There is no consensus, but many theories, as to why certain populations in Europe had a high incidences of blond hair. If there had been no specific selective pressure on hair color, scientists estimate it would have taken 850,000 years for the trait to randomly appear, but modern humans, emigrating from Africa, only reached Europe 35,000-40,000 years ago.[16]

One theory is that that early men simply found blonde hair more attractive.[17] Canadian anthropologist Peter Frost, under the aegis of University of St Andrews, published a study in March 2006 in the journal Evolution and Human Behavior that says blond hair evolved very quickly at the end of the last ice age by means of sexual selection.[18] According to the study, the appearance of blonde hair and blue eyes in some northern European women made them stand out from their rivals at a time of fierce competition for males made scarce due to long, arduous hunting trips; this hypothesis argues that women with blonde hair posed an alternative that helped them mate and thus increased the number of blonds.

Another reason: men may have preferred blonde women is that light hair color is a marker of youth - since many Caucasian[clarification needed] children have blonde hair but it darkens as they mature, blonde girls or women would appear younger and therefore, more fertile.

A theory propounded in The History and Geography of Human Genes (1994), says blonde hair became predominant in Europe in about 3000 BC, in the area now known as Lithuania, among the recently arrived Proto-Indo-European settlers, and the trait spread quickly through sexual selection into Scandinavia. As above, the theory assumes that men found women with blonde hair more attractive.[19] That low levels of eumelanin be somehow associated with an Indo-European speaking population group in particular is questionable because of the time lines proposed for the mutation and as one of the places with the highest occurences of blond genes happens to be Finland, a country notable for a Uralic majority language.

China is very large and some parts are quite hot. Thats why many have tan skin, it would be interesting to see if the further north you go the paler they get. It wouldn't surprise me if this was true. Russia on the other hand is namely cold, thats why they have pale skin. Cultural reasons would also be partly to blame for the races not mixing more. Its often taboo to have children with someone from another race, although its becoming more popular now days.

You both could be heterozygous for brown and blue. My family all has B blood type, and I have O - it works in a similar way. Also, it could be a polymorphic trait, in the sense that there are many genes which control hair/eye color, and thus varies the amount of brown.

Also, it's "Punnett" square, for the record.

EDIT:
Quote:
The genetics of hair colors are not yet firmly established. According to one theory, at least two gene pairs control human hair color. One gene, which is a brown/blonde pair, has a dominant brown allele and a recessive blonde allele. A person with a brown allele will have brown hair; a person with no brown alleles will be blonde. This also explains why two brown-haired parents can produce a blonde-haired child. The other gene pair is a not-red/red pair, where the not-red allele (which suppresses production of pheomelanin) is dominant and the allele for red hair is recessive. Since the two gene pairs both govern hair color, a person with two copies of the red-haired allele will have red hair, but it will be either auburn or bright reddish orange depending upon whether the first gene pair gives brown or blonde hair, respectively.

The two-gene model does not account for all possible shades of brown, blonde, or red (for example, platinum blonde versus dark blonde/light brown), nor does it explain why hair color sometimes darkens as a person ages. Several gene pairs control the light versus dark hair color in a cumulative effect. A person's genotype for a multifactorial trait can interact with environment to produce varying phenotypes (see quantitative trait locus).

One woman was born in Germany, Sweden or one of those countries with blonde hair and blue eyes as a genetic mutation. Of course she got banged alot and had many kids and it spread throughout the European world. As this combined with black hair of varrying degrees more hues came out of that resulting in redheads, brown hair, reddish brown, blondeish brown, etc. This spread to France, England, Ireland, etc.

Some white populations, mediterranean(from portugal all the way west) and middle eastern all the way to India kept black hair because it didnt spread that far.

This is starting to happen to other races now too as they interbreed with Europeans.

There is a settlement in China known as Liqian, a small mountain village just outside of the town of Yongchang, where blonde hair and blue eyes are very common.  The local populace attributes their strange features to a group of settlers from the Roman Empire.  Although a few mummies have been found in the area with red hair and caucasian features, researchers have been unable to link these villagers with Roman, or Italian in general, genetics.

What is even more curious about this is that Zhejiang province, the province in which Liqian resides, is on China's eastern coast, completely surrounded by China proper.  While one expects caucasian features to pop up in some of China's western provinces where trade with Arabs, Indians, and Persians has been going on for centuries, this isolated mountain village is in stark contrast to that.  My personal theory is that there is some other reason why blonde hair and blue eyes pop up there, and it has nothing to do with Romans.

So, my point is, light-colored hair and light-colored eyes aren't solely a caucasian feature.  Just overwhelmingly so.
