So what's the deal with the term "new age"?

New age seems to have become the new "hippie", but i personally will not embrace it as those before me have. It's condescending and an underhanded way of claiming that someone doesnt know what theyre talking about. I propose to you that the being "new age" is the best thing you could possibly do(within the confines of it's current definition) for we are living in a new age, where old ways of thinking have gotten us in a lot of trouble.

Its just a time oriented classification for occult schools of thought. The early 1900s were "the golden age" and this is "the new age"

Some of the New Age ideas are sound & practical, and others are total baloney.

new age is just a modern presentation of ancient beliefs and practices all hodgepodged together. a lot of it is just a kind of do -it-yourself spirituality.  its all eccentric to me.

a meditation practice and a qualified teacher is all you need, not books and crystals and shit.

"New Age" is just a euphemism for "idiotic and outdated belief system."  A lot of belief systems or "ways of life" classified as new age are modeled after ideals and beliefs that went obsolete a long time ago.  Mainly, it is the belief systems that were totally discredited by empirical science which define "new age."  Calling them "new age" just means that these idiotic beliefs have been put in shiny new bubble packs.  It's still a lot of hocus pocus bullshit.  "New Age" is just a catchall for any belief system which was dismissed over a hundred years ago because that belief system is stupid.  Examples include love of homeopathic or "asian" medicine or anything involving wearing magical jewlry.

No, I'm not an athiest.  I would not consider myself a skeptic either.  I'm skeptical to some degree, but I wouldn't say that I'm a skeptic.  Anyway, I'm definitely not an athiest.

Some forms of medicine were once thought to be quackery or New Age.  Acupuncture is now practiced in hospitals.  There are exceptions to your rule.  Phlogiston and spontaneous generation are now known to be bullshit.

Yeah.  When I wrote it I was just thinking about advertisements that throw the word "asian" or "chinese" in as though it's a magical word that makes medicine work.

I have a great fondness for many "new-age" writers, such as Terence McKenna and Robert Anton Wilson. However, a lot of silly incomprehensible bullshit also happens to fall under the same label, so I usually use the term mockingly.
