Psilocybe tampanensis - Confused - Two types?

One is a truffle/puffball. The other is a mushroom.

What's the deal with this? How can there be two types with the same name?

Because the mushroom forms Sclerotia, which is the truffle you speak of. Traditionally tampanensis is cultivated only for its sclerotia, but you can also fruit them traditionally.

Oh I see.

Can this be done with any species as long as fruiting conditions aren't present? Just let the mycelium grow and grow?

no, only a few species reliably produce significant sclerotia, most notably P. mexicana and P. tampanensis.

Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it.
If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.

Isn't tanpanensis the most rare active to date?

Or is it the most rare only in its mushroom form?

the only specimen collected in the wild [aside from the report from mississippi] was the donor of spore samples from which all circulating strains originated.

I was reading and noticed that the original Philosopher's Stone must be from Psilocybe mexicana then.

I believe that Philosopher's Stone existed before the discovery of tampanensis in 1977.

I don't understand why it was given the name Philosopher's Stone when it already existed as mexicana.

How are the potency levels of mexicana in comparison to tampanensis?
