RoadKill's HorsePoo Tek
    #910685 - 09/26/02 08:05 PM (21 years, 6 months ago)

Hey Roadkill and fellow tek followers,
In the tek, when you are pasteurizing the poo, you said "put purified or mineral water in the pot" with the poo and put a 25 lb over it. How much water is needed? Just enough to cover the sack of horse poo? Thanks

hi....Zwie

I put purified or mineral water down in the Tek....because my local water is terrible.
If you have good quality tap water....use it.

You want enough water to cover the poo.....then add a few inches.

You don't have to use a 25 lb. weight....that was just an example...use something heavy to hold the poo down.
If you don't have a Divot.....the metal thing that keeps jars off the bottom of the pot.....put a towel down under the pillow case....I have burned a hole in a pillow case before.

I got a few heavy duty black mortar boxes from a local supply company.
These were the small.....about the same size of an Alum Bread pan.
You might have a hard time finding some.

good luck!

I like to put enough water to submerge the bag, even w/ 15 lbs on the pillow case the thing tends to float up as the water beings a slow boil. I leave about an inch, if that much; of room @ the top of the pot. It is hard to watch it, makeing sure it doesnt start to boil heavily and overflow. Just watch it, and make sure it doesnt boil over. And the pillow case is UNDER the water.
Just my EXP

Well it really shouldn`t boil because well that would be too hot.
What I`d recommend is to turn your heat onto the lowest setting.
Turn your bathroom tap on let it get to its hottis and start transferring hot water to the pot to aproxomatily 3/4 of the pots height.
By now the temperature should be atleast 140.
I then take maybe 2 - 3 kettle fulls of boiled water and pour them in.
They should bring your temperature to about 175.
by now the stove should have been on long enough to maintain the 75 for as long as you want.
CHeck it a few times and adjust the heat as necesaary.
AT not one point in this experiment should the pot boil, because then it`s deffinatelly too hot.

Like Roadkill says, put a towel or cloth under the pillow case.
I use a pice of plastic with a rock or slat ontop of the plastic.
everything stays nice and still and under the water.

Also try to use your brain and realise that not everything needs to be followed exactly as roadkill has done it.
I personally use big bulk tubs because it`s my preferance.
I fnd small trays to be too iffy.

Like Road says as well, the water situation is totally dependant on your area.
In SA most of the water is of a very high quality.
I use tap water to mist and water my casings.

Would this be fine for the casing?

That size would be good, but it has been posted that mycelium eats through the aluminum trays. You may want to get plastic trays instead.

That'll work perfectly fine man. Any container will do it all you need is optimal conditions and the ideal casing - meaning how its put together - horse poo spawned? crumble/cased? casing layer ect ect - even colonization on casing layer?

Yup, Im following Roadkill's Tek exactly to every point. The point of "cooking" is to sanatize it correct? But doesnt it also extract many of the nutrients in the poo? Is there still the smell after pasteurizing? In addition, after I pasteurize, I cant let it drain in the sink because my doggy wont let me, so can I just place it outside? Will this increase contam? After all this, wet poo is bad? Why is this? If it is too wet, just squeeze the juice out?

You could just leave the poo in the pot until everything is cool and then take it into your clean room with all your ingredients and squeeze the water out.
Once you`ve squeezed out the desired amount you can start spreading it into your casing trays with your colonised substrate.
Pastuerising does remove some of the nutrients but not enough to make the poo useless.
You want to save that juice and use it for your substrate mixtures.
Or pour it into your potplants.
Liquid food
Make sure that when you squeeze your poo that it isn`t too wet because that useless.

nope.
It takes on a very earthy smell, but really not bad or strong.
I have tubs full in my grow room and they don`t smell.
I find as the mushrooms grow it tends to get more earthy as the manure and straw start to compost more.
I mayeb be wrong though.
the smell should never be a problem though.
The only time a really notice a smell is when the lid is taken off for fanning.

  >so can I just place it outside?

Yes... This will work fine.  Just drain all the water out, twist the pillow case up real good and tuck it under it so it doesnt come undone.  When its cool, just make sure you squeeze as much water out as humanly possible then cover it with saran wrap or aluminum foil.

I suggest if you are going to leave it outside, leave it in the pot with the lid on
with a strainer.

I use very similar aluminium baking pans. I usually get two grows from them before they start to deteriorate. So they should be just fine. The two important things the container must do is keep out light on the sides, and keep the casing in, if they do that its all good. The motar boxes are better only because they last forever. Be sure to wipe the pan out with alcohol, then let it evaporate before you put your casing materials in. Good luck.

Peace,
Bob
