The problem with this situation is very aggravating. Your parents gave birth to you without making sure they had enough money to give you a good life. This IMO is the primary consideration to make when having children, and your parents didn't care enough to think about it. Why aren't you angry at them for "holding you back"?

I'm in education and it really bothers me when parents do this to their children. Even the most low income families can pay for their children's education if they:

1. spend all 18 years of the child's life eating AT HOME.
2. Never take frivolous vacations
3. don't buy cable. EVER!
4. Don't have too many children. That shit is expensive.

My family followed this plan to get out of the ghetto. Instead of being mad at people trying to make a profit (whether it's fair or not), realize that your parents totally fucked you and were selfish with money and vow NEVER to do that to another human being.


wtf are you talking about.  it is not a parents obligation to pay for your college.  that's your own responsibility.  if they can help you out that's fine, but if not pull up your boot straps and work a little.  God forbid that you have to struggle a little to get something you want.

It should fucking be the parent's obligation to pay for everything until you can sustain yourself.

It's not your fault your mom got knocked up, it's your parents fault.

You don't think 18 years of supporting someone is enough? Thats ridiculous. I don't understand why people think they are owed something from everyone including their parents. Get a job to pay for what you want leave the parents out of it. The only thing to blame the OP parents for is not teaching him how to be self reliant. They probably gave him everything he wanted growing up and now he thinks thats how it should be when he is on his own.

whoever said its the parents fault, grow the fuck up. a parents job is to teach you how to do these things for yourself not to just give them to you. your childhood is thier responsibility.

I would be very nervous taking out loans in the current economic environment. It looks like shit is about to hit the fan in the very worst way.

Anyway, I wanted to get a Master's so instead of sinking upwards of 50k/year in some US school I'm kicking it in Netherlands and paying what amounts to around 2k/year in tuition fees. Socialised education FTW! :awesome::thumbup:

Other countries offer extremely low cost to free education because they don't teach you much. My brother went through college in Germany for 6 years and in that time I was going to college fully paid by scholorships here in the US. I was able to get a job within days of graduating. He still has yet to find a job because people don't want to accept foreign degrees.

Believe me or not, its true. Don't go with the free shit, its free for a reason.

Did you and your brother study similar subjects? For 6 years? What degrees did he get for being in school that long?

It's free or cheap because many governments subsidize their education systems (unlike the US) not because it's shitty.

God, where do you people get this shit?  In the US college education is heavily subsidized.  Even if you get no financial aid at all, and just pay the full cost of in state tuition (about about 3-4k per semester) you are getting a subsidy of roughly 2/3.  Your whining because education costs the student between 0%-33% of the actual cost.  Should really be grateful for such a heavy subsidy, grateful to the rich tax paying americans that make education assessable to low income people.

If it was "heavily subsidized" then how do you explain the skyrocketing tuition fees? Are the savings from these subsidies being passed on to the students? 0-33% of the actual cost... is this an actual figure or are you pulling this out of your ass?

It's amazing that the US education system demands that students go into an incredible financial hole once leaving the system and pay off a monstrous debt all the way up to retirement in some cases. I just don't see a justification for having young people looking at five to six figures of debt just to have an education.

Universities are cheaper in Europe not because they are shittier but because governments and the people, asked via referendum, have decided that they want their tax dollars to go toward education because they value it highly. Even the US should see the value of investing heavily in their own human capital, especially in lieu of its falling rank among other countries with respect to education.

The US has (or should I say, had) PLENTY of money to make college education more attainable but it has other priorites such as bombing brown people and locking up potheads.

It is absolutely a real figure.  The cost of unsubsidized education is the "out of state" tuition.  Look it up and you see that out of state tuition is about three times higher than instate.  Normal in-state tuition is only about 1/3 of the actual cost of your education.  Now if you get any type of grant, or scholarship  your cost goes down from 33% to nearly 0%.  In fact, an appreciable portion of people even get grants for more than the tuition costs!
