Please Delete My Account, I'm In Serious Legal Trouble

I can't go in to detail for fear of this being traced back to me.

I am under serious investigation. I judge it quite likely that my posts here will become a part of that investigation, and if that happens, it will be very bad for me. It would be very helpful if my account could be deleted so my posts can't be linked back to my username.

Please, I am in a very difficult spot and need help. I probably won't be able to check this thread again, so please delete it. If someone could report this post so it gets the attention of an admin, I'd be really grateful.

Use the contact us link to open a support ticket and make the request.  However, if you read the administrative guidelines, it states that accounts will not be deleted.  I don't know if exceptions are made or not, but it worth asking.

He did also contact us via PM and support ticket, and I told him the same thing I tell everyone who asks: we don't erase accounts or mass-delete posts, it's right in the guidelines you agreed to when you registered, but you can edit your old posts and change your name to distance yourself from the site if you wish. Everyone needs to be aware of the fact that we do not delete accounts, and take that fact into consideration when posting. I feel bad, he happens to be a long-time member who is highly regarded in the community, but we don't make exceptions to this policy, period.

Out of curiosity, why don't you delete posts upon request?  It doesn't seem like it would be too difficult to write a script searching for posts made by a particular user name.

In retrospect, sure.  But this is only one poster out of countless many who contribute to a thread, and the relevant parts that might be applicable to the topic will appear regardless in people's quotes.

It's not that it's technically difficult, it's that we don't want post after post of "deleted" piling up over the years. We get a lot of these requests, and 99% of the time it seems like unwarranted paranoia, but we aren't really in a position to make that sort of judgment. It's easier to have a blanket policy, and expect people to be responsible for their own posts.

You could just as easily delete the account details associated with the post (you know, kind of like how the "anonymous" forum works in the first place) and it wouldn't "fuck up the flow of threads".

Its a bit asinine to expect someone to go through and delete several thousand posts.  It's ludicrous a poster on a site associated with illegal activity cannot delete his/her account simply to preserve the "flow" of a thread long since forgotten by the active community.

I'm assuming that this site was not the reason this guy is being investigated..if it is I'm getting the hell outta here too.  But still. . .I'm thinking if you're in that much shit this site is the least of your worries.  They have to have something much more serious on you then your post here which you could just easily say is all fantasy.

I'm curious what other boards you know of which provide this option?

Anyway that's kind of the point. We don't want or expect people to delete thousands of posts. Presumably they'd remove incriminating information and leave everything else intact, which is the desired outcome. It may be ludicrous in your opinion, but it's explicitly spelled out in our terms and conditions, and we don't force anyone to register or post here.

Oh and #12, I'm quite sure this site wasn't the root cause of his problems, in 11 years I've never heard of anyone being investigated due to a post on the Shroomery. He was just concerned his posts could be used to bolster existing evidence against him.

You agreed to these terms before you signed up. Your being ludicrous thinking a admin should have to delete any info off this site. Do it yourself or shut up. Shouldn't have registered if you think it's asinine and ludicrous.  :nonono:

That's just the thing though, he CAN go back and delete them all.  But nobody wants to do that because it's a huge pain in the ass and would take forever.  It certainly makes a person be sure they want to take such an action before they do it.  Ythan says he gets tons of requests to have this done, but look at how few people go through the trouble of deleting their posts.

I think it's pretty clear that most people don't actually need this done and come to their senses later.

Yup that's exactly it. Say you literally have 1,000 incriminating posts which you need to delete. And assume it takes 15 second to delete each one, which is just a ballpark estimate but it seems about right once you get into the groove. It would take you just over four hours to erase your post history, or half a normal day's work. If your freedom in really on the line, that's nothing. But if you're just feeling a little paranoid, it's a powerful disincentive. So actually I think it's a reasonable and effective measure to prevent unnecessary overreactions, while providing for truly serious circumstances.
