I talked to a friend who used to be a K9 officer.  Without trying to sound too interested I got some information out of him about drug dogs.

- There are 3 types of trained sniffer dogs.  Drug dogs, Citrus Dogs, and Bomb dogs.

- Drug dogs are trained to smell the following: Cocaine/Crack, Heroin, Weed, Methamphetamine, (possibly PCP, I can't remember, but who actually does PCP these days?)

- Dogs absolutely cannot be cross trained between fields. For example, a citrus dog cannot be trained to smell heroin.

- Dogs in general can be trained to smell anything, but drug are very rarely trained to smell more than the standard list of drugs mentioned above.

- I specifically asked about ecstacy and the officer said that standard drug dogs are not trained to recognize ecstacy, however they can smell meth.

- Drug dogs are not normally trained in smelling pharmacuticals, such as xanax, percocet, etc..

- The officer never spoke of drug sniffing dogs recognizing shrooms.
