I assume we're referring to the same paper but maybe not.

In the most recent paper (that I recall), there were some important considerations. The most important being that they were comparing two separate reinforcers (saccharine and cocaine).

Analyzing "demand curves" for differing substances is an involved process. You can manipulate what rats "choose" in a number of ways (e.g. have them choose plain rat chow over cocaine etc.).
