I think you can use calcium carbonate in place of hydrated lime.  I couldn't find it worth a damn here, I checked the grocery stores for pickling lime, I checked the agri- and horticultural stores around the city, I checked home depot and lowes stores all over, just couldn't find it - hell I even checked a fish store that sells large tanks and stuff.

I had to go calcium carbonate in place.  I think it's like 4 parts more calcium carbonate to lime (i.e. if you needed a 1/4th cup of lime, you'd need a cup of CC).  If I'm wrong on this amount someone please let me know, as I'm starting to use that ratio as a replacement for lime myself.

Limestone is a sedimentary rock composed largely of the mineral calcite (calcium carbonate: CaCO3).

Oh, hehe.   I'm stoned as hell I thought he was talking about lime.  Check out your local petstores.  Calci-sand is pure Calcium Carbonate.  I even put it in a mortar and crushed it up to a fine white powder to mix in w/ my casing layer and such.  :o  Both the petsmarts and petcos had it here, it's in the reptile section, it's a safer sand for reptiles than wood chips and silica sands apparently.

If you need raw limestone, I'm not quite sure where you'd look.  Maybe a rock company?

Hoffman's Horticultural Hydrated Lime is what I use, a bag will last you a long, long time.  It should be readily available at most stores that carry gardening supplies.
