Environmentalist Version of Star Wars by Derrick Jensen
    #8737660 -

For those of you who don't know who Derrick Jensen is, he's a wonderful writer and an incredibly articulate philosopher/social/environmental activist.

I HIGHLY recommend his book "The Culture of Make Believe".

Oh, and before you start watching this... yes, he DOES advocate blowing up dams. "If we get rid of 4 dams a day we can get rid of them all in 50 years!"  I'm only telling you ahead of time so you don't confuse him with the fluffy pacifist environmentalists, which he spends a fair amount of time railing against in this talk.

yes, the talk is two hours but the starwars part is right in the beginning of this first clip.

This second part begins with him defining what he means by "bringing down civilization"

"I think that the word fuck is the most amazing word in the English language, Because it's all of patriarchy condensed into four letters. Because the he same word that means make love to, means do great violence to."

also

"I'm strongly in favour of closing the border to Mexico. On one condition. If you close it to people, you close it to the movement of resources as well."

I really like this guy.
He seems really intelligent, and is good at getting his point across. Thanks for introducing me to him.

Yeah he's really great. I mean, he definitely takes the most radical position possible. He's not just against the system... he's against fucking CIVILIZATION! LOL! That's why I like, him. It's the most radical position you can take.

Yeah, I never really understood hierarchy and power structures until I read "The Culture of Make Believe". And also how that relates to homophobia.

"Man fucks woman. Subject verb object. Man fucks woman. Subject verb object... It's only acceptable for violence to flow down the hierarchy, but never up the hierarchy..."

I hope you watched the whole thing.

I haven't read Endgame, but I hear it's a little heavy on the whole "environmental apocalypse" thing. "The Culture of Make Believe" was just an in depth analysis of civilization and the "dominator culture" (a term I believe Terrence McKenna used as well).

I also really like his whole thing about bashing hope.
"Hope implies that you have no agency, no control, or influence over the situation."

oh, BTW, I *hope* Obama wins the election and brings the change we need. I mean, once we get a democrat into the whitehouse everything will be better!...

I agree with his prediction of the future for sure. I hate to say it, but I wish I'd live to see the fall of civilization and descent into anarchy, but I don't think it will be happening for a long time. Governments have pretty good control over their people. Shit will go down when necessary resources become scarce in the coming decades/centuries.

That's one thing I didn't understand.
Why are dams so evil? pardon my ignorance.

I discovered this guy years ago, and his book "A Language Older Than Words" blew my mind. A couple years ago I interviewed him for a zine I was writing. I was suprised he even consented to the interview, and then when I was really awkward and nervous he was really good at just having something to say and helping me clarify my questions. One thing I like about him is that it's clear he's just a genuinely kind and sincere human being. I saw him speak last summer and was impressed with how eloquent he was, and how he was able to express a fairly radical position to a fairly non-radical audience in a manner they were able to actually hear without just reacting adversely to and shutting out. Dude definitly has great speaking skills.

Oh, and Sampa- dams kill pretty much all the fish that pass through them so they play a pretty significant role in obliterating the wild salmon population out on the west coast, and probably other fish populations in other regions.

no, they don't. People just cooperate because they believe they will be hassled or subject to violence if they don't.

In reality governments are only able to function as long as people are convinced that they are more powerful than they really are.

I'm glad that this was so well recieved. I was afraid a bunch of douchebags would post shit like "duh, if he's so against civilization, doesn't he realize that books are a product of civilization and that he couldn't be a writer if... :blah: "
:whatever:

But yeah, I highly recommend you guys read his books!

*bumpity* WATCH THE VIDS!!!

NiamhNyx, that's really cool that you got to interview him! I would love to be able to have a conversation with him one on one. He definitely seems like a very kind and genuine person.

"The Culture of Make Believe" really blew my mind and opened my eyes to patriarchy and violence against women, power and privilage... among other things. I never actually finished the book because I had to give it back to the library, but I'm sure I will borrow it again one day and finish it.

I just borrowed Endgame from my sis, so I guess I'll read that in the meantime.

Before listening to this lecture I could never really justify violence on my own, but after listening to him I realize violence isnt bad, its just been used by the wrong poeple for too long.  Time to take the power back.  Damn this topic makes me wanna jam out to Rage Against The Machine.

Exactly.
Also, they don't want or can't imagine an alternative.

I mean, causing another being to suffer is never a good thing. The thing is that violence IS dreadfully effective, and it's way easier to control people through violence than it is to sit down and cooperate.

But in that same token, sometimes the only way to be free is to smash shit. I don't think that destroying weapons is wrong-violence, and I don't think that using violence in defense of yourself or another is wrong either, so long as you stop once it's use isn't needed and you don't just hurt people because you're angry and you want to cause pain.

It's like he says, "Love does not imply pacifism". You may love your abusive father, but sometimes violence needs to be used against him in order to stop the abuse (at least momentarily).

And that's how I like to think of "civilization"; as a dysfunctional family with a culture of abuse that gets passed down from generation to generation.
