Mirror Neurons
    #8675978 -

Anyone read V.S. Ramachandran's A Brief Tour of Human Conciousness?  He discusses "mirror neurons", neurons that will fire through thought similarly to neurons being activated by external actions.  For instance, peeling a banana activates certain neurons in various parts of the brain.  Someone who is told to imagine peeling a banana, when watched on a brain scan, will show neurons firing in a similar pattern.  His theory is that humanity's wonderful ability to transmit information through culture came about primarily because we have very advanced mirror neurons, and that these mirror neurons are what allows us to reach bliss states through art.

In his own words: "When you imagine something- as when rehearsing a forthcoming bison hunt or amorous encounter- many of the same brain circuits are activated as when you really do something.  This allows you to practice scenarios in an internal simulation without incurring the energy cost or risks of a real rehearsal" (page 56)

I'd be interested to hear people's experiences with visualization, especially ones related to painting, poetry, music, etc.

I have heard of this concept before.  I like this quote ^ specifically.

When learning complex subjects in school, I have a habit in my daydreaming time to envision teaching the subject to others.  In the recent years I have come to suspect this has helped me learn and retain my subjects.

Aw damn. You just reminded me that I have to read this article for the lab meeting tomorrow:
