Porno Study
    #8669548 -

*This information is not yet available on recordable public data.

My friend is a Grad student at the University of Washington, Department and Centre for Psychology and Neurological Studies.

He's told me they're working on a new Study to determine if there is a significant difference in how males and females respond to visual sexual activity (pornography)
Although the results, thus far, are inconclusive... he has shared with me some interesting outcomes.

The First study was conducted with 10 males and 10 females. They would engage in a 5 minute group viewing of sexually explicit material while being attached to a Brain-Wave machine that registers neurological reactions that are then used to decipher how the brain responds to the viewing material.

*All participants were 25 years old.
Weight less than 200lbs, more than 130lbs.
No history of mental illness.

During the 5 minute viewing, 8 out of the 10 men showed a slight stimulus increase in the hypothalamus and the Frontal lobe which is in an indication of being aroused sexually.

10 out of the 10 women showed no significant signs of increase in the hypothalamus or Frontal Lobe, 3 out of the 10 women showed increased stimulus in the amygdala; which would be an indication they felt anxiety or even fear.

Here's Where it Gets INTERESTING!

With the Same patients, an individual viewing was conducted for each patient with the same viewing material. The patient would be in a relaxed environment with no visual contact (meaning they were attached to the brain-wave machine, but no cameras etc.) for 6.8 minutes of personal viewing.

The study found that 8 out of the 10 men showed a 13-28% increase in sexual stimulation than to group viewing.
2 out of the 10 men showed 30% and 34% increase.

The study found that 10 out of 10 of the women, in the personal viewing, showed some signs of stimulation.
The percentage however, was quite staggering.

Personal sexual activity viewing results.

3 out of the 10 women showed a 15%-25% increase in stimulation
2 out of the 10 women showed a 26%-35% increase in stimulation
3 out of the 10 women showed a 36%-45% increase in stimulation
1 women showed a 58% increase in stimulation.
1 women showed a 79% increase in stimulation.

Interestingly the 3 women that felt the Fear and/or anxiety in the group viewing... were the women who showed the most sexual stimulus increase in the personal viewing.

Women, in this particular study, showed that in a personal setting, became more aroused by pornographic material than the Men.

i have to wonder though what kind of porn it was though...

because most porn is oriented towards an adolescent-male (attitude) audience, and is quite sexist and degrading towards women. So I would not be suprised that women felt fear and anxiety if they were shown certain types of degrading pornography.

is there any speculation as to why the results are the way they are?

We can speculate all we want, we just got the same data they did.

My advice is to find those things that give pleasure and do them often without too much attachment and relax and wait for the show to end.

I like free markets and all. Truly I do, at least in general, but there needs to be some kind of oversight in recognition of sustainability. Life works the same way, on a bunch of sustainable systems. Why not honor what made us what we are and take some lessons? Nature FTW!

I asked about that myself, and we both agree that the anxiety probably stems from the fact women are taught to be sexually isolated at early ages... that they aren't supposed to be sexual or otherwise be subject to slander; whore, slut etc.  Another factor may be the never ending pressure put on women to aim for unrealistic beauty standards.

I'm not sure what porno it was, but all the subjects watched the same one... I'll try to find out and update.

ok ill explain the results.

watching porno with complete strangers for 10 minutes in a lab environment is not gonna be pleasurable.

the reason the chics that showed fear were most horny was because they never get laid and are scared of dick.

Those results are quite intriguing, and I have some supporting anecdotal evidence to add.  About a year and a half ago, I was at my then-girlfriend's house and noticed some video files on her computer desktop.  Naturally I was curious, so I looked into 'em and one was of a guy masturbating.  When she got back in the room I played it again and she got wildly uncomfortable, even though she admitted that she enjoyed watching it in private.  She was in fact so disturbed by watching it with me that she nearly fought me to get to the computer and turn it off.

I don't typically watch porn with others, but one of my porn-addict friends (who has just started posting at the Shroomery, Hey Johnny! ) came over one day and wanted to peruse my collection.  I didn't see any reason why not, but I did note that while watching these pornos with him in the room, I did not become physically aroused.  Obviously I was quite conscious of his presence and therefore it seems I had blocked my potential for arousal.  Nevertheless, it was not uncomfortable to watch the porn with him, but it certainly didn't hold the same affect as if I had been watching it by myself or with a woman.

It's all in the mind you know...

What happened in the control condition?

I wonder if there were some gender differences reflecting attitudes about being in groups VS. isolation in general.

The reactions of the women were do solely to NOT being alone. I would guess that most women would not want be aroused when surrounded by guys they don't know. It's just not a safe situation. For women arrousal all comes down to trust. It's very ingrained.

ALSO, If you guys are interested.  This study was in response to IRV Binik at the McGill University in Canada.

U of W unofficially stated the instruments used to determine their findings were antiquated and 'were not performed to the fullest' potential.
They claimed Binik's devices failed to meet accurate neurological readings.

Binik claims that men and women both respond (not necessarily enjoy) to pornography in equal capacity & speed...
Current evidence, while still undetermined, is suggesting that Binik may have been wrong.

Here's an article published about Binik
I'll try to find out more if I can.. if anyone's interested
