When I was 18, I found a lump during a self breast-exam. They did a mammogram, and no, it didn't hurt that bad. And they removed the lump shortly thereafter. Luckily it wasn't cancerous, but it was enough to scare the shit out of me.

Most women I know, if you ask them about self-breast exams, they look at you kind of funny,and admit that they don't do them.

Regardless of what any study says, I suspect that self-breast exams CAN and DO catch cancer if they are done properly, and regularly.

Does anyone have a source on that study? It's interesting at the very least. It seems like a common sense issue, you feel your boobs, and if there is a lump, you get it checked, if it is cancerous, you get into treatment. I'd really like to know how that could be ineffective.

Oh, I'm not saying it's ineffective at all, just saying that mammograms are the most effective way of detecting precancerous growths. Not trying to trivialize the self breast exam at all, it is important. A good friend of mine recently found a lump and had it removed. She's 21, scared the shit out of her.

I wonder what one of those lumps feels like (in a non-perverted way).  I mean, I take it it's pretty obvious that's something's not right.

I'd imagine that it feels just like a rigid lump that doesn't feel like the rest of the boob? :shrug:
