solar calender

Say you wake up in the middle of the woods with no idea what year/month/day it is.

what is the best way to make a calender to aid in survival?

yeah, you must be high, what does a calendar have to do with survival?  besides, the day/month/year is dogma.

Well, if you know your latitude you can figure out the season.  (but to differentiate between spring and fall you would need to note the change in suns height, not the height alone.)

animal migratory patters

I'm guessing the sun would rise in spring and set in fall

Cut a notch in a tree every day. That lets you keep track of how long you've been there. Make observations about how hot it is, how much daylight you get, etc. After a few months you'll get an idea of the seasons.

Honestly, I just wouldn't plan on staying there long enough for that to be an issue...

I'd probably walk to the nearest town and buy a calendar.

this comes from a random thought I had the other day, I don't plan on being lost long enough to become an issue.

you couldn't do the tree thing if you were traveling but I suppose you could notch a walking stick or something.

If you were travelling you'd be even less likely to need a calendar, I reckon.

you're probably right but I've always said if I were homeless I'd walk south for the winter.
