Kahlil Gibran : Madman/Prophet
    #826722 - 08/18/02 09:06 PM (14 years, 11 months ago)

I was searching through my meager cashe of books for something to post. I happend upon my old copy of 'The Madman'. (Published in 1918) - I was given this original printing by my Mother, an avid reader. She thought I too, could benefit from his writings, as she did when she was given the book in the late 60's by her older brother.

"The Madman", to me, is a Guide. In the sense it is a collection parable like prose, showing the Reader how foolish We can be clinging to unseen dogmas. /How simple Life is, and how Truth is relative, as is Beauty and Love./ Enlightment is the only possible if you admit you are a Fool.

In a poetic sense, Gibran is a Modern day Martyr - He had a passion, and it consumed him completely. He gave his life, albiet by drinking himelf to death, for his Message. On canvas on paper, his life was spilled. But, as is the case many times the Message is taken, distored, and used in ways it was never meant. THIS is the real Sacrifice.

What "The Madman" has taught me is that the minute My Truth infringes on Yours, it is no longer.

I preferred to read the parody book, "The Profit" by Kellog Allbran.

a very cute assembly of proverbs.

For instance:

It is easier to pass gass through a needle than throu the eye of a camel.

I've never read any of his books, but Kahlil Gibran is the author of one of my favorite quotes. "Forget not that the earth delights to feel your bare feet, and the winds long to play with your hair."

I have it printed out and taped on the wall next to my bed so that I see it every morning when I wake. It serves as a constant reminder for me to go outside and bathe in the beauty of nature; to let my soul be fed by it.

I definitely plan to check out The Madman.

Namaste.

In reply to:

I see Truth not as a relative entity but as an absolute

- Plato
I cannot think of an example of an 'Absolute Truth' (save Mathamatical) And that is a system that was created, so it can be argued it is not truth, per se, only convienient.

I believe that there is an abosolute truth, but that relativity is a part of that truth.

BTW I LOVE "The Prophet". Haven't read "The Madman" though.
