dude.. making mix CDs is fucking hard

you have to consider what the other person likes. what bands they have and haven't heard. how much of yourself and your own likes do you put into it? you want to impress the other person with good songs from little-known bands. music they wouldn't otherwise have heard. you want to introduce them to their new favorite band.

you have to include songs that are catchy enough to really get their ear on the first listen, but you can't very well just put the band's hit single. you want the cd to endure the test of time. for them to listen to it a year down the road and still think "man, these are some great songs."

i'm currently making one for a decent friend. we haven't given each other one before, so it's new and scary. i've been listening to a LOT of my newer favs, pausing songs, restarting them, comparing songs on albums to decide which one i think would fit best on the cd.

i have a little booklet i've been carrying around in my back pocket for me to take notes on songs that inspire me enough to be considered. i'm working on this harder than i am on schoolwork.

it's damn fun though.

I made 1 mix tape once for this time I was going to roll on the 4th of july with this cool chick. It never happened.

I figure people who would want my music have heard it already or would not like it.

yeah man, that's part of the dilemma. obviously the intent of a mix tape is to introduce the people to some of the music you consider good, but at the same time it needs to be something you think they'd like. it makes it difficult.

You got yourself a nice little project there. I hope to one day be recognized as the ultimate mix CD maker by the people close to me... the ultimate mix CD ever made... i'm going to start working on it right now. all i knows is pink floyd is going up there

Mix tapes are serious business man.

That said, I've never made one. I don't know, seems like an enjoyable task. No one to give them to, I suppose.

yeah, primarily. bands i have on it so far:

xiu xiu
cloud cult
architecture in helsinki
stephen malkmus
love is all
clinic
the do
angels of light

you may notice quite a few of these can be found in the indie album thread, and that's because i really found stuff i liked in there. i've still got to add a bunch of stuff though. i might rar up the mix once it's done, if anyone's interested in giving it a listen.

Damn man. I know zero bands you just listed. I am pretty out of the loop with new music apparently. I need to expand my horizons at some point.

I am listening to Angels of Light, which I downloaded in the Indie Album thread. It is enjoyable so far.

the song i was going to put on there was track 9 "sunflower's here to stay". the thing is, i practically hate the first minute, but love the last minute thirty. there are actually a couple of songs on the mix that i feel like that about. it's aggravating.

If there's a good point to fade or cut into the track, you could just lop off the first several minutes. When making mix CDs, I almost always end up chopping up at least song or two.

and it's got to flow man.

that's definitely what will make or break your mix...the flow...it's great if you can sculpt those 70 minutes into one cohesive thing.

I've made some incredible mixes for friends in my life. I take that shit wayy too seriously, usually ends up taking me a month or two before i'm satisfied with it. But my friends are all musicians who have the same respect and love for music that I do, so I always know they'll appreciate a good mix.

Don't forget to start it off with the BEST few songs you got.

I usually go for some innocent sounding short spoken word piece to get their attention then blast 'em with a heavy and fast song just for giggles.


Flow is a good suggestion.

But you need contrast  also!
...it's the backbone of ALL art.

Short spoken bits and the like help break up
your CD into different movements and genres
esp if your covering a wide range of musical styles.

I usually get so frustrated after spending hours and hours on it that I end up arranging the songs by the length of their titles.:tongue:

{random shit works sometimes! contrast! }

or just dump a bunch of songs onto a DVD or something and let them sort it out.

But I definitely enjoy crafting a mix...I just wish CDs were longer!
