Not really. The points give the moderators more options on what they can do. Even if a mod issues a permaban, it doesn't go into full effect until approved by an admin. It takes quite a lot to get banned from the site...
The point system was originally introduced to try and help keep things even across the different forums and mods. It also provides a history to help the mods keep track disruptive users.
We are not "zero tolerance" types around here... unless you are intentionally being disruptive, a puppet, or spamming.
