I just found out that there is a MGMT show in two days in my state.
I'm pretty excited because I've been waiting for a good show for a while, but I just barely started listening to MGMT. They are pretty good though... Any fans?

Ya know, I liked 'em for a bit when I picked up the album.
But like so many bands coming up right now, I find so much derivative wish-we-were-the-Arcade-Fire shit in their music, and I find it deeply disappointing and uninspiring when it comes right down to it, and I'm not caught up in the moment of the music.

oh yes, you'll find several MGMT fans on the shroomery. most of them came out of the woodworks in this thread http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/7803342/page/0/fpart/1/vc/1/nt/5
and i personally just caught MGMT's show this past friday. they're touring with yeasayer. it was fantastic. both the head bands, and even the opener whose name i've regretfully forgotten, played an awesome fucking show. MGMT sounds a lot more rockish and a little less disco live, but it's still danceable. really fun show. even hung out and chatted with the yeasayer vocalist and drummer after the show.

Choral singing, lyrics heavy with wistfulness about being children...the choral singing especially.

Yea I think their acoustic songs are brilliant.
Especially "pieces of what".

I agree somewhat I guess....
They could throw out that track "kids" and I'd be much happier.

okay, i'll give you that. there has been a lot of choral singing as of late. but that doesn't define the style of music. i dunno, i'm not the best music critic, nor can i really define and separate the many aspects and influences maintained by any single band. and i can definitely think of a handful of bands that emulate a similar style of choral singing, but i don't really feel the bands are all to similar in enough aspects to be considered rips on the arcade fire.
one that comes to mind immediately is grizzly bear. i mean their entire schtick is that ghostly melodic choral singing. and i hold them to be quite different from the arcade fire, and very different from MGMT, who utilize that fun disco pop synth feel in several songs. meh, or maybe i'm just biased

I'm not sick of them yet.
I'll go if they come through town.

I don't get the popularity of MGMT, they sound no different than any other indie-electro outfit that's been playing for the last few years
They're not bad, but they're not particularly memorable either

Can you give examples of who they sound like?
People compare them to Of Montreal a lot. I don't like Of Montreal though

I guess I could see the pop sensibilities, but I find more of a connection with bands such as Hot Chip and Aqueduct
They also SORT of remind me of Radiohead but I can't put my finger on it
