On this week's show:

Featured New Rock Album: Iron & Wine, *The Shepard's Dog* (2007)...KD led me to this Austin, Texas band, led by the long-bearded Sam Beam...this album works its magic in so many ways that I cannot say I know its odd, beautiful depths, not even close yet, trippy, pretty, dark, dark, darkling...

Featured Classic Rock Album: The Police, *Synchronicity* (1983)...there was a moment back in 1983 when the Police were the biggest rock band in the world, and this was the album their reputation stood lastly upon, a grooving, intellectual maelstrom...that moment returns upon a new play...it's been awhile for me but I'm ready...

Storybook Time: Chapter Seven of *Breaking Open the Head: A Psychedelic Journey into the Heart of Contemporary Shamanism * by Daniel Pinchbeck...

Readings from *Why?* fixtion & *Many Musics* poems...& this week's featured artist is George Harrison, tracks from his 1970 triple album masterpiece, *All Things Must Pass*...arrived finally in the year's last month, 2008 drooling from nearby coming, what strangest days they will be...will we do what the best lights within urge?

On this week's show:

Featured New Rock Album: Keane, *Under the Iron Sea* (2006)...this UK band adds guitars to its piano melodic sound, & a darker shade to its lyrics, a bit like Coldplay, Travis...pretty music, romantic, restless, roots in '60s rock, musically polished & deep seeking...

Featured Classic Rock Album: Nick Drake, *Pink Moon* (1972)...English musician Drake I'd heard of but not dug into before the past few days, and there's not a great volume to find, three albums and a few adoring documentaries...within this 'cume though are some beautiful, haunting songs, searing guitar, a haunted soul & his short life's strange wisdoms...

Storybook Time: Chapter Seven of *Breaking Open the Head: A Psychedelic Journey into the Heart of Contemporary Shamanism * by Daniel Pinchbeck...

Readings from *Why?* fixtion & *Many Musics* poems...& this week's featured artist are Billy Bragg & Wilco's two *Mermaid Avenue* albums, unrecorded songs by Woody Guthrie they set to music back in the late 1990s, sweet sweet stuff...every December the land becomes melancholy and introspective, a bit maudlin, wrestling with holidays none of us really understand but most feel obliged to participate in...music helps, as in most things, music helps...

On this week's show:

Featured New Rock Album: The White Stripes, *Icky Thump* (2007)...I've been wanting to like a White Stripes album for years now, and this one has caught me...hard, crazy guitars, a vibe steeped in Led Zeppelin without imitation or idolatry, weird moments, and then some pretty ones...it's quite good...

Featured Classic Rock Album: R.E.M., *Document* (1987)...this album is 20 years ago but damned fresh and its themes of alienation and paranoia sound like tonight...one of the best rock bands in history, this album deep in their amazing run of masterpieces...

Storybook Time: Chapter Eight of *Breaking Open the Head: A Psychedelic Journey into the Heart of Contemporary Shamanism * by Daniel Pinchbeck...

Readings from *Why?* fixtion & *Many Musics* poems...& this week's featured artist is Syd Barrett, songs from his post-Pink Floyd albums, *The Madcap Laughs* & *Barrett*...this has been one of the darker autumns in the history of the American Republic as it seems its so-called leaders govern from scandal to scandal, and hopefuls to the throne try to mock and jig and jive their sorryass way in...2008 looms up monster, looks tall and uncertain...what will it be? Keep asking...keep hoping anyway...

On this week's show:

Featured New Rock Album: Yeasayer, *All Hour Cymbals* (2007)...this new Brooklyn, New York band call their music "Middle Eastern-psych-pop-snap-gospel" which is good as any description...some beautiful harmonies, exotic instrumentation, a deep groove to slip into...an album good as any of the best new rock releases of this very fruitful year...

Featured Classic Rock Album: Spirit, *Spirit* (1968)...first album by this Los Angeles hard rock band turns the group loose in a frenzy of sitars, dulcet strings and wild psychedelic guitar...at times a pretty album, always rooted in the most excited of it's times passions...a band that should have been known better in its heyday and since...

Storybook Time: Chapter Nine of *Breaking Open the Head: A Psychedelic Journey into the Heart of Contemporary Shamanism * by Daniel Pinchbeck...

Readings from *Why?* fixtion & *Many Musics* poems...& this week marks this show's 5th annual holiday broadcast, celebrating another year most of us came through and are exiting out of OK, and the hope humans know, because they too know despair, that 2008 will be better, will mark a turn back to the hills and the sun after years now in the murk, slave to something part thrust on us from above, part come from the worst within...last show of 2007, going out with a snap, a crackle, and lots of rock!
