Really!? Wow... very unusual for higher education classes. I can't remember a single college class that I took that didn't curve. Some profs would claim they didn't use a curve, but they still shifted the scale (they just didn't curve it).
When I first started in college, they wouldn't let you drop a class after two weeks; if you did, it counted as an F on your transcript and GPA. I loved this, 'cause on hard classes you could bust your ass at the start of the semester when everybody else was goofing off and get high grades, then ride the curve through the difficult part of the class. About halfway through my college career, they changed it so you could drop up to a few weeks before the end up the class and just get a W (withdraw) on the transcript and no hit to the GPA. Sucked. You think you are safe riding the curve, and all the sudden the bottom of the curve drops the class, fucking everybody else over.

I don't understand the curve part of the bell curve...
It doesn't make sense to me how this works out, with a curve and all.
And how does one go about riding this curve?

well if before 90% of the class had an F, that means you were in the top 10% if you had higher then an F. However, if the 90% that had an F not get negated, that means you are no longer necessarily in the top 10%

> I don't understand the curve part of the bell curve...
Basically, the teacher takes all the students and lines them up from best to worst. The teacher then says, the top 10% get A's, the bottom 10% get F's, and the middle get a B, C, or D with most students getting a C. The curve part comes because the scale is curved rather than linear... 10% get A, 20% get B, 40% get C, 20% get D, 10% get F (for example). You points don't get you the grade, but rather your points simply order you in relation to everybody else.
> And how does one go about riding this curve?
If you do really well at the start of the class when it is easy, you are in the top 10%, or the A range. Later, you can goof off (i.e. put your time into other classes), knowing that you will drop down into the C range, at worse. This is riding the curve. However, if the bottom students all drop, then you are no longer in the middle, and instead drop down to the lower 10% and get the F.
