    #761668 - 07/20/02 10:57 AM (14 years, 4 months ago)

i surf the web alot and pick up all sort of little bugs but most of the time a little cleaning up is all that is needed but i can fix this

my home page of choice is google but i thunk somewhere along the line i clicked the wrong button on one of those damn popup screens and set my home page to this stupid site called istartthere.com. well now every time i shut down my computer my homepage defualts back to this site no matter howmany times i change my defualt and i think the same bug is cuasing me trouble here at the shroomery cuz now every time i move to a new screen here i have to hit refresh to not get something i looked at two days ago for instance every time i go to the mushroom cultivation forum the latest post is 7/16 until i refresh but i still have to refressh the post when i get their if i have been their before if i want to see any of the new replies.

does anyone have any suggestions as to what i'm missing and how to get rid off or fix whatever is cuasing me not to refresh or remeber settings on IE.

you don't think that nasty little email i sent them after i couldn''t fix the homepage problem cuased them to make my problem anyworse and has anyone ran into this stupid site before?

I use a freeware program called Ad Aware, it finds all the crap that some websites stick in your machine and from there you can clean it out. It is a great program. Here's a link to the Cnet download area It's free, so what have you got to lose? Hope this helps.

run "Regedit" from the command prompt and check out these keys:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

There are other versions like \Run and \RunOnce and \RunOnceExe that may also be applicable.

Applications that run on startup may trigger their startup here. If you see any strange ones, get rid of them.

Some applications have a valid reason for being there (like virus scanners). Some have a valid reason to be there but don't do any good you may want to take them out anyway. Microsoft messenger at one point had a program in there "msmsgs.exe" even though I never used the program, when I removed the key my machine crashed much less.

good luck
