Questioning the PGP encryption enabled on PM on this board...
    #7613014 - 11/08/07 10:03 PM (16 years, 2 months ago)

I've just realized that the Shroomery is generating my keys for me and doing so under a master set. Obviously, at least one of the admins must have the keys for everybody (along with the PW) of everybody who uses the PGP on this board.

So can somebody please clarify the security of encryption used in PM here?

As secure as PGP can be.

Master set? What are you talking about?

Nope. The key is encrypted with the password you type in. Even with a court order, we would not be able to decrypt encrypted PMs due to technical limitations. The only things we keep are the encrypted private key and the public key. You have the password to the encrypted private key, not us. Without that password, the key cannot be decrypted, thus your encrypted PMs cannot be decrypted.

(Read my use of "cannot" as "cannot within reason" ... obviously any encryption can eventually be broken if you put enough CPU and time behind the effort.)

Let me be very clear: We do not record the password that you use to encrypt the generated private key nor do we have any kind of backdoor or master key that would allow us to decrypt your encrypted private messages.
