Opuntia ficus-indica has also been reported as containing the hallucinogenic chemical mescaline, the sympathomimetic chemical tyramine and the cancer-preventive chemical n-methyltyramine. Other Opuntia species that contain mescaline are: Opuntia acanthocarpa, O. basilaris, O. echinocarpa, O. imbricata, O. invicta and O. spinosior. (Reports of Opuntia cylindrica having a mescaline content of up to nine-tenths of one percent are false, the actual species tested was Trichocereus pachanoi.)

Some other active Opuntia species include: Opuntia acanthocarpa, O. aurantiaca, O. basilaris, O. bigelovii, O. clavata, O. dillenii, O. echinocarpa, O. elatior, O. fulgida, O. hickenii, O. imbricata, O. invicta O. kleiniae, O. lindheimeri, O. maldonandensis, O. megacantha, O. megarhiza, O. moniliformis, O. polyacantha, O. pseudo-tuna, O. reflexispina, O. sp., O. spp., O. schottii, O. spinosior, O. stanlyi, O. tuna, O. versicolor and O. vulgaris.
