playing with my wood
    #7462594 - 09/27/07 11:45 PM (16 years, 4 months ago)

I'm always dinking around with wood lately, came up with this one.  Not sure how much of it is art, but it is my creation nonetheless!

68" tip to tip, 44pound draw at 28", red oak with a red oak lamination, glued into about 1.5" of reflex per limb.  The darker wood is Zebra wood.  Going to be selling this one.

Sweet! I also love working with wood. I carve my little brother all sorts of odd weapons. I think it might be my favorite medium to work off of. Do you have pictures of your other work? And does that bow work?

Toddo - it's fully functional. I have been toying at making self-bows for a few years now. I shape a bow, setup a target on my straw bail, shoot it 50-100 times, and either put it on my bow rack or sell it and start another - I really just enjoy the carving and the target practice.

That must be so rewarding...doesn't it suck to sell something like that? I've not made a bow yet... more along the lines of 'battle' axes and swords with some engraving work.

I have a wood bow here. (not made by me) Seeing yours kind of inspired to embark on the journey of making a functional one.

Right on.  The one book to start with is "The Traditional Bowyer's Bible Vol. 1" ISBN 1-58574-085-3 (two and three are great as well).  This book will take you start to finish on your first bow.

Also, http://b16.ezboard.com/bpaleoplanet69529  is my fav. website for sure!!   Check out the bow sub-categories, everything from primative to fiberglass lamination.  Lots of help there and tons of great information to get you going.

Selling the bows brings me a smile honestly.  It helps to suppliment my income, when they sell , and perhaps spark interest in someone else in traditional ideas and ways, many forgotten about.

Have fun!
