hey im getting into making my own Absinthe i have tried to make one batch myself but it did not turn out so well so i was wondering if you guys could give me a couple of good recipes and tricks on how to get my absinthe good much appreciated

well i distilled one batch about a month ago and i used a traditional recipe i found on the net but it didnt go so well it didnt louche that good but it tasted okay but not a good as i was hoping so i was just looking for any tips or tricks any extra ingrediants oh i used the recipe that only use three ingrediants Absinthe D'Pontarlier

Looking at that ebay page I got to say..

No! Thats not how you make Absinthe. Absinthe shouldnt contain sugar, it should be higher proof and if you want quality you shouldn't use essences but rather dried herbs.

Absinthe Inferieure perhaps but not a grand absinthe. You're going to have to distill theres no way around that.

Lies! You can get a liter bottle of the very finest Absinthe for $125, and a decent liter bottle for about half that, including shipping to the USA if you know your sources. The prices seem mindboggling until you realize a liter of Absinthe can pour 25-50 glasses. Absinthe is usually sold in half-liter bottles though, prices adjusted accordingly.

I beg to differ. You'll get a sugared essence absinthe at most, not the real thing. You must add the sugar to keep the oils dissolved because the proof of your vodka (37.5%, 75 proof) is too low. All hallmarks of an inferior product, and this for the $30 that could get you lets say a half liter bottle of an Absinthe Duplais Balance, one of the finest traditional distilled absinthes out there.

Indeed you have to buy that separately. Lets do the math:


1..you buy the essences at eBay $30 and need for it two 1/5gal bottles of vodka $20 to get about 1.5 liters of a 75 proof "something" for a total of $50 containing 560ml alcohol

2..you strike a good deal and for just $10 more you buy a liter bottle of Absinthe Duplais Balance. You now have a high quality distilled absinthe containing 600ml alcohol.

You'd be getting pwn3d on quality as well as alcohol content if you bought the eBay offer. I'm not saying it will taste bad, but it costs about as much as a high quality absinthe, while you end up with what by its means of preparation must be an inferior product. The price difference is a mere $0.20 per glass.
