If you have network access, then transactions could be possible. It will leave a trail, though.

Home Depot got in trouble because of a unsecured wireless network. All the credit card scanners were wireless, so some guy sat in the parking lot and ran ethereal for a while. All the CC#'s were clear text so he got a bunch of them.
