That may have been why it originated--another theory is that kids were so poor they started to wear whatever they could get their hands on--but now it's an actual style and cothes are made that way.

I usually buy clothes a size too big because loose fitting clothes are more comfortable to me. I hate for clothes to fit tightly, and if it fits tightly anywhere on my body I probably won't wear it. Its not a style thing though, its just more comfortable to me that way.

i'm guessing like most trends it started in the big cities. it didn't reach the hinterlands until brands like jnco were being sold at jcpenny. i remember the late 90s when every cooler than thou kid at my little rural, white school wore those pants. you got to add a little extra swagger to your step for wearing a wu-tang C.R.E.A.M. shirt.

yeah, the few manson kids also wore jncos non-stop. so really the only way to tell who was a potential friend or foe was the shirt they wore.

I've always heard it started as a jail thing, because don't get any belts in jail, and you pants would sag. So you get out of the joint and you keep doing it that way.

I wear baggy clothes but I still wear a belt. I just like having freedom of movement. Nothing is better then going from my Geek Squad uniform into street clothes.

My take on it, psychologically, would be the desire to increase one's idea of self-worth and self-importance by taking up as much space as possible.
