sincere and humble expression of the inner relationships with fears and desires. delving into the dual nature of the induvidual, its fate, and its ability to choose.

the song is like a prayer for light, and a begging for salvation from darkness within, told as a story. sort of like a bible i suppose. there ARE alot of references to various faith-related metaphors.

"counting stars by candlelight, all are dim but one is bright" suggests an ultimate goal.
"the spiral light of venus rising first and shining best"
suggests the goal is love, and all encompassing, as a spiral, in sacred geometry, is ever-spreading
"from the northwest corner, of a brand new cresent moon"
in the initiation rights of freemasonry, the candidate, un marked and pure, begins his journey through an allegory of both light and dark that we all must walk. he starts at the nothwest corner of the lodge, himelf, the "brand new crecent moon" becomming light, and begginning his time.
"crickets and cicadas sing a rare and different tune"
the of the world perhaps becomes much more meaningful when the nature of the journey is suddenly suspected by the one travelling, and also those watching. or those being told the story.

the storyteller, of course, is more than man. perhaps god, but not the controller, or the father of popular faiths.

merely a scource of all things, the well which light and dark flow from. intangeble by direct explaination so described in ritual metaphors..
how like reality. how refreshing a view.

I also think, but could be wrong, that the book of the annotated GD songs has a write-up of it too, but I'm not positive

Yeah it does....the most detailed write-up in the book.

I'll have to bring it down & add some stuff to this thread once I get my second wind of the day.

Great song, and great topic BTW.  The first time I ever heard terrapin station was at one of the fall 2002 Other Ones shows at the Spectrum in Philly, and it's held a very special place in my heart ever since. :heartpump:

That whole show was fantastic, first time I ever saw the boys & it's one of my most cherished memories.

I had the good fortune to see him perform between sets with The Other Ones, and yeah, just him up there with his guitar was better than the rest of the show. Crazy night too, bumming rides from strangers in the hotel lobby, not bringing a coat to a show in late november and freezing my balls off, the good, good mushrooms I was provided, tripping in a gas station for over an hour waiting for a cab, and the cab ride and driver taboot!

Terrapin has multiple layers and meanings, though the very base level of the song is a drug realization to me, as so many dead songs are.

Quote:
Let my inspiration flow in token rhyme, suggesting rhythm,
That will not forsake you, till my tale is told and done.
While the firelights aglow, strange shadows from the flames will grow,
Till things weve never seen will seem familiar.

Beginning. Hope, anticipation of flow, rhythm and tenderness through the experience until it is complete. By the time we're done, the strangeness will have transformed into familiarity and all will be well.

Quote:
While the story teller speaks, a door within the fire creaks;
Suddenly flies open, and a girl is standing there.
Eyes alight, with glowing hair, all that fancy paints as fair,
She takes her fan and throws it, in the lions den.

The narrative serves dual purpose. First off, it is sparse on details, allowing imagination to relate strongly to each person what is meant, but is sharply defined for no one. Rather like the experience.
The storyteller is your experience as well, but we'll get back to that. The whole part of the challenge, the lady as prize, the daring necessary to enter the lions den, an unsafe, potentially dangerous area challenges the listener to leave their place of comfort to address a challenge that is frightful, but presents tremendous reward should they meet that challenge. The soldier isnt going to take that risk, but the sailor-- traveler, adventurer -- just might.

Quote:
The story teller makes no choice. soon you will not hear his voice.
His job is to shed light, and not to master.
Since the end is never told, we pay the teller off in gold,
In hopes he will return, but he cannot be bought or sold.

The storyteller, as the experience, relates what is inside, shedding light on what is already there. He counsels, tells parable to get you to make realization on your own, but will not to resolve issues --that is the role of the listener, and by this time the experience is fading fast. You can try to pay him off for the service and try to reattain the space where the 'story' is clear before you, get him to do it for you but it doesnt work that way --you can't force the experience, that's disaster. You must figure it out on your own.

Quote:
Some rise, some fall, some climb, to get to terrapin.

Collective experience. The audience and band, through rise and fall together attain ecstacy --they have reached terrapin station as metaphor.

Quote:
Inspiration, move me \ Hold away despair \ all are dim but one is bright \ a rare and different tune \ I know well get there soon \ I cant figure out terrapin, if it's the end or beginning

Personal enlightenment from the journey --be inspired, stay positive and avoid the darkness, shine brightly from the inside with your humanity amid so many dull depressed individuals, this rare beautiful thing --terrapin as metaphor, we'll get there, though I can't explain where 'there' is (but perhaps you somehow understand what I mean...).

And the 'at a siding portion':
Quote:
While you were gone, these faces filled with darkness.
The obvious was hidden. with nothing to believe in

Time spent away from this intimate personal counsel, darkness filled in and you've lost the belief you had previously, so naturally...

Quote:
Youre back in terrapin for good or ill again, for good or ill again.

thanks everyone... those are some good links too... i was more asking for peoples opinions not strait from the source but the links are awesome....

just to add to the question.... what do you all think terrapin station means as a place or an idea. as in "hey guys I'm going to terrapin station." where would you be going.

for me terrapin is the infinite. terrapin is union with the creator. the utter bliss of all creation that was experienced many times at grateful dead shows when the crowd and the band would melt into love all together in divine radiant energy. that is what or where i believe terrapin to be... that space of timeless union with god (for lack of a better word) your opinions would be appreciated.

and i can't figure out,
if its the end or beginning,

Fall 2002 tour? I was at one of the Spectrum shows....the 23rd I think, it was sick. I was 17 at the time....I had literally just started going to these kinds of shows & festies and got turned on with LSD the summer before. It was really an incredible experience, something so new; now, almost 5 years down the line it's where I feel the most comfortable, the most at home. So looking back, I was finding my way home back then. :heartpump:

So, that's what Terrapin means to me, in a nutshell.

terrapin is about ( like lots of dead songs) that unnamed thing, the thing you couldent name, or rather the thing we have all been trying in vain tho create with all of or facy language and culture.
terrence mc.k calls it the transendental object. it is the center oint from wich we are all being puled through time. it is terrapin station :gd_icon:

Indeed.....great setlist. I think the 02 tour was better than the 03 & 04 tours personally, though all those shows were great times.
