This Day In History - Feb 28, 1953

February 28, 1953

Francis Crick first conceived of the double-helix shape of DNA while under the influence of LSD.

The abrasive and unorthodox Crick and his brilliant American co-researcher James Watson famously celebrated their eureka moment in by running from the now legendary Cavendish Laboratory in Cambridge to the nearby Eagle pub, where they announced over pints of bitter that they had discovered the secret of life.

He told a fellow scientist it was LSD, not the Eagle's warm beer, that helped him to unravel the structure of DNA, the discovery that won him the Nobel Prize in 1962.

Wow. This is the first time I've heard of this.

Any sources for this information? Is it just a possibility that people like to put a lot of faith in, or a controversial topic, or something that's relatively confirmed and just not spoken about?

I love talking about him and Bill Gates, and other famous people who have used LSD in way to achieve greatness. Its amazing though, even when I present factual evidence about these guys and thier use of LSD, people still dismiss it. The general consensus of the masses is still that LSD makes you insane and stupid and will ruin your life.

This just goes to prove what I have come to conclude after much meditation and use of these substances. While sure these substances if abused or used incorrectly can have detrimental effects, I also believe that if used properly they can free the mind and thus free the body. Govts realize this (IMO as I have no proof). Many of our politicians up top are members of secret societies. IMO, many of these secret societies use these substances to gain higher "knowledge". They also know that a society that is allowed to use these substances freely is their biggest enemy. Before I personally began using these substances, I had a very different view of the world and what was going on as well as a "don't touch it" policy as that was what I had been taught. My third eye was opened and that to me is a govt's biggest fear. I am no longer blind to the bullshit that is controlling our lives.

People may call us nuts, but I tend to agree with you.

Alcohol and tobacco just hook you and make you feel better, thus they are legal. Weed, shrooms and LSD make you think, and realize what's REALLY going on. It is the govt's worst nightmare... an entire society enlightened to the reality of existance.

I'm not 100% sure of all the secret societies and their actual power, but the evidence is really starting to point at 'something'... There is certainly a tangible fear among the power structure regarding mind altering drugs... Why else would something as simple as weed be procecuted so harshly?

I've done my share of psychedelics and believe they do offer a sense of insight, however I am far from being "enlightened to the reality of existance." Maybe you can help me out in understanding this one...

This was new to me as well. It was the member captmueller who first posted this here in News. He also recommended the book 'Acid Dreams'. Thanks captmueller. Another good book is 'What the Dormouse Said'.

Can we maybe give the "government secret conspiracy against you thinking" theory a rest? Drugs were made illegal by people who didn't even know their effects. It was just a bunch of crazy evangelists and prohibitionists like Ainsworth who felt that any mind-alteration was an abomination against society and morality. If you want to know why weed is prosecuted so harshly look no further than moralist Ainsworth.

Tobacco and alcohol are legal because they have an already existent social place in America, and more importantly they're woth a lot of money to a lot of people.

Finally, I've never known anyone who has been "enlightened" or even made a particularly more intelligent person as a result of pot, except in that using it will prove to you that the government is lying to you about drugs. Hallucinogens are of course a different story.

I don't think it's either/or. Rather I think these theories (the ones that come off as RIDICULOUSLY paranoid "they" are against us crap) are tapping into the fact, on a subconscious level, the drug control issue is a mind control issue.

Pot IS a mild hallucinogen, Mr. Smarty Pants.

And if you don't know anyone who's been enlightened by pot, you need to start hanging around with more intellegent potheads.

There are different camps in the pot world... Some prefer big blunts, 40's and gold teeth. Most of these users are missing the point IMO, and only use the drug for it's obvious eurphoric effect, and to be 'cool'.

Then there are the users who toke small amounts in most cases, and sit with their friends disecting the universe, and debating about the philosophical aspects of existance.

I'm just saying/thinking that weed is ILLEGAL due to both of these situations... The former being what they preach, but the latter is the real, unspoken reason.

From your sig, I see that you have something to learn about reality. Mother Theresa, short of killing Jews, is just about as evil as Hitler... as a human being that is.

Next time you get REALLY stoned, think about how absolutely insignificant you are in the universe, then get back to me. Get some astronomical texts to help you understand just what 'reality' is. Here's a hint... It's way bigger then this simple planet we call home.

Shrooms work better, quicker... But weed can be very thereputic for the mind when used properly.

While this might be one of the main reasons why it became "illegal" in the first place, there are many other reasons that keep it as such.

1. Hemp produces far more useful fiber per acre than cotton.
-Hemp has few natural enemies, unlike cotton
-Hemp is a faster growing plant than cotton
-Hemp creates clothing/rope/materials that are far superior to that of cotton
-Hemp also has far more uses (oil, rubber, etc) than many other plants that are already "staples"

2. Marijuana is a far superior substance to many pharms.
-ZERO side effects compared to pharms
-100% natural compared to pharms
-FREE...many pharms have had millions of dollars put into research
-Users can still lead normal lives unlike users of 'comparable' pharms

3. Shrooms are being found to have medicinal purposes
-cluster headaches
-addictions: research is showing that periodic use can help break addictions
-NOT POISONOUS, unlike many of their pharm counterparts.


So...please...while many of these substances have been made illegal on the fear front, many industries would have much to lose if people were able to self medicate from these more natural substances.

One more thing: Almost ALL GOOD musicians and artists and video game designers (just to name a few) have used pot and other substances to improve their work. Whether we're talking about mushrooms, pot, absynthe, opium, and other naturally occurring substances, much good has come from their use and much EVIL has come from their illegal status.
