Man VS Wild
    #6403438 -

Its a really cool show on Discovery channel where the host is dropped off in the middle of no where and has to survive with nothing but the clothes on his back. He teaches you how to survive in the desert, swiss alps, the jungle and a bunch of other environments. This Friday at 9 he has to survive on a desert island and he builds a raft and a bunch of tiger sharks surround him. It looks crazy. I really wanted to see this episode but I'm going snowboarding. If you never saw the show you should, its pretty cool. I really wanted to see it, but Ill be happily on a mountain, hopefully I don't break anything like last year.

Hate to say it, but that guy is a chump.
I've met survivalists that would absolutely smoke this guy in the field.
It just makes for decent television programming is all.

Yeah I do agree with you on the host. I to have met survival experts who are far more interesting. However the show is cool, and the places he goes are really awesome. Have you ever herd of Manny Puig? Hes more of an expert in dangerous animals, but as a kid he used to go out in to the Florida everglades with nothing but a shot gun and survive out there for a week. He had a really interesting life and he only hunted with a spear but took the gun just in case. Hes mad cool, hes been on jackass a couple times for like the animal stuff.

if he is actually teaching useful survival techniques then it sounds like a badass show. if not, then i hope he dies from the aids.

that Manny Puig guy from "jackass", and more commonly "wild boys" is the fucking man, not only is he a wild animal expert, but he also looks like hes had about 10 lifetimes worth of trips.

That guy on "Man vs. Wild" is cool too, but you can tell its all about the show for him. Hes out there alone, so he has to set up all the cameras for the shots. About 1/4 of the show is him walking away from the camera, so it makes you think,

"That guy just had to set that camera up, walk away from it, walk back to it and take it down, walk back in the direction he was going, then give it to some guy later to edit out him walking back towards the camera"

Sounds real tedious right

Les Stroud, the Survivorman, could kick the shit out of that pussy little Man vs. Wild dude. He brings a whole camera crew with him for fuck's sake. Les lugs around his own camera crew. 55 lbs of it! And he does shit with a lot less. No canteen, no fucking flint to start a fire.

No the guy on the show does teach you actual ways to survive and its really cool to see how he does everything and how he makes things. The camera guys are also really good at filming and they are not allowed to interfere with the host at all. He has to survive until, he makes contact with other people, whether its finding a town, being rescued by a boat or spotted by a plane. Its a really cool show. Yeah Manny is sick, I just bought a DVD by him called "The Ultimate Predator" he rides hammer head sharks in it and does a bunch of other crazy shit. The cool thing about him is hes really laid back and down to earth.

Yeah what happened to Survivor Man? I never see it on any more? "I shouldn't be alive" is also a cool show.

I remember Les Stroud.
I enjoyed that show a lot.
Although I noticed he has a really irrational fear of bears.
One night he was in his debris shelter and he heard some crunching leaves outside.
He was absolutely convinced that it was a black bear, so he got the fuck out and trecked for miles in the pitch black trying to get away from the area.
Sort of a nut job, if you ask me. It was probably a ground squirrel or something.

Yeah, I saw that one to. He ran for miles and thought it was hunting him, he was really freaking out. However if it was a bear, they can smell better then 6 times as good as a bloodhound. I think they usually leave humans alone though as long as you don't sneak up on them and they don't have cubs around.

Bears are sort of a wild card.
Most of the time, you are probably safe, as they will likely be more scared of you than you are of them.
They go after scents. Anything from jerky to tooth paste.
But sometimes they will rip your belongings to shreds just out of sheer curiosity.

Are you sure? I've seen damn near every one of those and I'm pretty sure I've seen all the ones where a black bear could possibly attack. He doesn't seem like the kinda guy that would do that.

i totally agree, i have a certain degree of survival training...almost on the same level as bear grylls (man vs. wild), not quite as hardcore, he was britsh SAS. i just have aircrew survival school and arctic warfare school and actual combat in the desert. but anyway les stroud does it right. he teaches how to survive and only takes his cameras for a week at a time. bear just shows you what would really suck....and look how tough i am i can eat raw meat from a decomposing zebra right off the carcas. and he takes MANY stupid risks that could get people hurt if they tried to do some of the things he does...like why would you have to climb down a shear cliff face in the stream of a waterfall...les does things much smarter and shows you how to survive in an array of evironments...les is just hands down more survival savvy then bear! i do watch the show though, it is entertaining...but i just hope no one thinks that some of those things are the correct thing to do in a given situation.

We have a little war going on here. I just heard an ambulance go around the corner. what will it be tonight? the son who kicked his mother down the stairs? the father who beat his wife to death with the telephone? the baby who got forgotten by his mother because the drugs were really good today? you never know. you never know and you never get to know unless it's you, and if its you, well, you dont want to know. ~Henry Rollins "Art To Choke Hearts"

Yeah, I saw one where he took off from his camp at night and just kept running but I think he thought it was a grizzly. I'm not positive because I only saw the episode once but I remember he wanted to be as far away from it as possible. I agree, Les Stroud is definitely the better of the two. But what happened to his show, I never see it on any more and it was really cool?

Yea, I agree with you on the taking of unneccesary risks.
When you are in an Actual survival situation, you REALLY need to take energy expenditure into consideration. Some things just arn't worth the wasted calories.
However, it is a television show, so it needs to have demonstrations.

That was Bear Grylls that did that. It was the 1st episode where he parachuted into the Rockies. He was running through the woods and using the light from the camera to find his way..

I just watched that episode again on On Demand... but it hasn't been aired on Discovery. It's only on Discovery On Demand for me.

Same thing happened to me when I played Neil Armstrong in Moonshot. They found me in an alley in Burbank trying to re-enter the earth's atmosphere in an old refrigerator box.

Ohhhh... it was Bear!
I guess that further adds to the premise that Bear is spaz, and Les is the man.
