Worst president in US history, hands down....and we've had our share of jackasses over the years. I can't wait to see what they write about him in the history books.

I remember asking my dad if he thought bush was worse than nixon....at the first answer was no...but now, a few years after I asked him, I asked him again and this time he said yes, he had to think about it a bit, but still, the answer was yes.

That Rolling Stone cover is classic, and a good example of our freedom of speech and the press... Could you imagine that magazine cover in North Korea!

I hate W... from the very beginning I just thought he was too religious, too stubborn, too stupid and juts a classic example of a "Fortunate Son".

So, I agree that W is probably one of our worst Presidents ever, but I really hate the methodology used in the Rolling Stone piece.

[gets on soapbox]
"Survey of Historians" my ass.

This is mostly a personal thing because nobody ever listens to surveys of economists (most of whome I idolize). Surveys of American economists are carried out pretty regularly, and they usually turn up about what you'd expect: legalize drugs, social security is stupid, and the environment is for losers.

Of course, no one listens to these surveys, and frequently those involved are unfairly labeled as "partisan hacks".

Example: Alan Greenspan was far from being alone in the economic world in believing that social security absolutely needed to be privatized. And yet upon saying so he was decried as playing partisan politics. But, anyone who remembers the Clinton era knows the Greenspan worked closely with Clinton to keep the economy going, i.e. he was clearly non-partisan.

[ /soapbox]

At any rate, GW is clearly among the worst we've ever had, though I think it's VERY hard to quantify worst overall. For example:

Wilson was in the KKK (which, I think is pretty bad)
Grant may have won the war, but ran a government more corrupt than Harding's, and let's not for the anti-semitism
LBJ was good on race, but come on, Vietnam?
President Taft, 'nuff said

Definitely though (again with the possible exception LBJ for Vietnam, I don't care how bad Iraq is, it was fuckin' Vietnam) W is the worst contemporary president.

what's so wrong about a survey of historicans vs. a survey of economists?

A lot of people take the economy at face value, governments when they get desperate lie and decieve their true economy, usually keeping seperate books and the books that the people are aware of.

Russia percieved itself as a financial powerhouse, but ultimately their liquidation of their agrarian economy, and re-educating their citizens in industry. This among gross military expenditures led to their downfall and the eventual collapse of other Soviet bloc nations like Romania and Yugoslavia.

Its very simple for governments through out history to simply lie to their populace because its effective, and time and time again desperate empires need to lie to their own populace in order to achieve stability.

sadly, a very large portion of this country is the same way. That's how he got elected twice.
The United States is full of stubborn religious idiots.

Once, men turned their thinking over to machines in the hope that this would set them free.
But that only permitted other men with machines to enslave them.

Nothing, I'm just jealous that historians get mainstream recognition for their views when my personal heros, sadly are overlooked.

Sure Milton Friedman got press, but what about his contemporaries? Gary Becker, Robert Lucas, Michael Grossman, Kevin Murphy, etc. they get no respect.

I didn't really want to derail this thread though, W is the worst President we ever had in my lifetime, and probably quite a bit before that.

I'd like to say he's the worst president in history, but many other presidents, even ones who are highly respected now, did worse things. Think the Patriot Act is bad? Look at the Alien and Sedition Acts. Think the Iraq War is bad? Look at the Mexican-American War. I think the reason he's perceived as worse than the presidents who did these things is partly because of bad memory, but also because we've come to expect more. That said, he's unquestionably the worst president of my lifetime.

Worst ever. Hands down.

It will take decades to undo the damage he has done to our international reputation and strategic position in the world with the war in Iraq. President Reagan's NSA director, General William Odom called it "the worst strategic mistake in the history of the United States."

And he's not even done yet!

Bottom line: He made our enemies stronger and our friends abandon us.
