Sum pub help

I've got a hardrive taken from a dell with windows xp set up on it.

The user forgot the password, so i need to get into MYDOCUMENTS.

It says "Not assessable. Access is denied." And the "Windows" folder appears empty....

Is there any way to get past the restrictions ?

-Open My Computer
-"Tools" -> "Folder Options" -> "View" tab
-Uncheck "Use Simple File Sharing" at the bottom
-Apply -> Ok

-Right click on the documents folder
-Click "Sharing and Security" -> Click the "Security" tab
-Click "Advanced" -> Click "Add"  -> Click "Advanced" -> Click "Find now"
-In the list, choose "Administrator"
-Click "OK" on the top 2 windows
-A new dialog box will pop up.  In it, check "Allow" "Full Control"
-Click "OK" in the remaining windows.

I'm pretty sure he wants to get into the My Documents folder of a separate hard drive, which came from another comp that had XP on it.

Even if he reinstalled XP on that hard drive, he would still have the exact same problem.  Reinstalling XP won't fix the permissions.

NTFS permissions won't get in your way if you use Linux.  :smile:

It was quite easy to bypass the restrictions.

You have to go to folder view options and select "Advanced sharing tab"

Then you can move the permissions over to whoever's PC the harddrive is being read on.
