Physics coursework

Basically I have physics coursework due in at some point next week, so I've finally sat down to do it.

In this piece of coursework I have to describe the material properties and how my chosen material benefits the world. The more indepth it is (regarding the actual physics) the higher my mark.

My chosen material is silicon. I have to do a powerpoint presentation (lasting 8 minutes) and Im completely stumped for content.

I hope theres some physicists here :grin:

Well, you have the whole semiconductor aspect, but that's boring. Also, silicon is important in sand. It's very resistant to weathering, and therefore, makes a sound building material. What the fuck do you need to talk about?

I'll answer more specific questions. ok?

Yeah, the only thing i can think of is using semiconductors in electronics.

By material properties I mean I need to babble on about shit like youngs modulus, stress, strain, structure, density etc I might include the fact that its peizoelectric as well.

The thing is I'm not particualarly sure what I have to talk about, either =/

hey, silicon is easy.

make a list of everything you can find which is, in some way, made of silicon.
and then apply which part of physics is involved in how it works.

physics is everything. There's the actual mechanics part, but there's also everything electric and magnetic.

Go check out the wikipedia page on silicon

Also if you need to talk about each of those things, you can calculate out the spring strength of silicon usings youngs modulus, also the diameter of a silicon atom.
Another good talking point is how those relate to making it a good element to be used in electronics. Particularly being how the lattice shape of a silicon compound effects conductivity, and insulation.

nah cause Im a drug user see, and my teacher wont believe its my work if hes sees that I Have 20 pages of degree level physics :laugh:

anyway theres some pretty inteligent people here. Im just looking for a kick in the right direction as coursework is what always lets me down.
