GOP threatens with Terrorism
    #6204245 -

GOP Election Ad @ YouTube.com

ter‧ror‧ism  /ˈtɛrəˌrɪzəm/
Pronunciation[ter-uh-riz-uhm]
–noun

1. the use of violence and threats to intimidate or coerce, esp. for political purposes.
2. the state of fear and submission produced by terrorism or terrorization.
3. a terroristic method of governing or of resisting a government.
4. the calculated use of violence (or threat of violence) against civilians in order to attain goals that are political or religious or ideological in nature; this is done through intimindation or coercion or instilling fear.

They are clearly channeling terrorism through our media, give it some thought.

EDIT: ask today. does your government truly have your best interest in mind? if not, would you vote for such a government?

Cool ad.

Note it doesn't ask anyone to vote for a Republican candidate. Just asks people to vote.

And it is undeniable that those threats were made by the Islamothugs. If you feel the Dems can negate those threats better than the Repubs, by all means vote Dem. Or if you feel the threats were empty boasts, by all means vote Dem. But don't pretend the threats were never made. They were.

It is neither "terrorism" nor "fear-mongering" to remind folks of the stakes.

I acknowledge the reality and the origin of these threats.

Yet I will not accept an effort to use these threats for domestic political gain, especially when they are aimed to sustain and prolong a disgusting and inhumane 'war.'

This is crummy politics in my opinion.

You're going to have to explain how encouraging people to keep voting is going to sustain/prolong the war.

Unless you can come up with some complex logical explanations for that analysis, I'd have to say that your comments are ass backwards.

Konnrade, he's not saying that encouraging voting is going to prolong the war. He's saying that Republicans encourage voting for their party and additionally, use threats of terrorism to secure political power to prolong/sustain the war.

voting is going to sustain/prolong the war? you're twisting my words here. :hypno:

i said that the use of fear to get people to vote for a particular party that supports this war is unacceptable. is it not apparent that the aim of this ad in question is to prolong war?

Well no it really dosn't seem like terrorism, especially because we could proabably find alot better examples of our goverments terrorsim, or supported terrorism, done since they came into office. But yeah anyone who thinks terrorism can be bombed out of existance should vote, too bad the democrats arn't any better

that's the thing, though. The only mention of ANY political party is a brief, tiny appearance of their website URL at the end. Hell, it's possible not to notice it.

If it wasn't for that second-long appearance of a nondescript URL, the commercial would have been nonpartisan. It was actually a very uncharacteristically modest commercial.

Have you ever had a television on for any amount of time during a political race? Partisan commercials are never that low-pressure. That was just a PSA, and it's nothing whatsoever to get worked-up about.

There are things that the administration actually is pushing on people by frightening them with terrorists... this commercial doesn't exactly measure up to those things, and even if it did... it would be the single least important instance of this that I have ever seen.

The commercial is apart of the Republican propaganda machine, even though it's not clearly stated. History validates my claim very well... I live in IL and nearly every commercial for a National Republican candidate attempts to scare the public using terrorism as the prime mechanism. Democrats don't try to frighten people. Bottom line. Stop arguing a moot point and as a Republican, which I presume you to be, come up with some real solutions to the war on terror. Democrats seem to have the better ideas ... use our elite troops and economic power in cooperation with underdeveloped nations to promote Western ideals and thought. In the long run we will be better off. Invading countries like Iraq just pisses the populations of those countries off, prompting underlying civil, sectarian wars. When we build schools and subways, the disinfranchised peoples of the world, plagued by fundamentalist ideologies, will realize that we the West are the good guys. Long and short is, scaring people into a stringent police state isn't a viable option.

As I said, if you believe the Democrat approach to negating those threats spotlighted in the ad is superior to the Republican approach, then clearly you will vote for a Dem candidate.

It truly is far less a partisan ad than it is a public service announcement.

Clearly the Republican party is gambling that more American voters approve of their approach to dealing with terrorists than approve of the Democrat's approach, or they wouldn't have run the ad at all. But what makes you think they are right about that supposition? Maybe the ad will backfire on them because many Americans will think, "Hey... we have pissed off the 'splodeydopes mightily by invading Afghanistan and Iraq and by calling Iran evil. That's why they make all those threats all the time -- because we are fucking with them. Given the chance, they'd leave us alone. Time to elect some Democrats who will calm those fellas down by coming to a mutually agreeable accomodation we all can live with."

Let's face it... if that same ad had been run by the Dems gambling that more Americans would prefer the Dem approach to terrorism, would you be pissed at the Dems?

You should be thanking the GOP for spending THEIR money on an ad which highlights just how much the 'splodeydopes hate America's policies towards Muslim countries. Even your average knuckle dragging Bush voter can see that if America had better (i.e. Dem) policies towards the Muslim world, there would be less reason for the more hotheaded ones to make threats and Americans would be safer.

by your logic, any politician that has ever made addressing crime or national security a part of his or her campaign strategy is a terrorist.

not exactly, any politician who addresses crime or an issue of national security as part of his or her campaign strategy in order to instill fear can by its very definition be considered a terrorist.

the act of terrorizing is actually not so uncommon in our everyday lives, we just use different words for it. take a kid bullying another kid, he is dominating or coercing by intimidation, sometimes even, yet not always, violence.

he is terrorizing, but instead we say he's picking on him, teasing him, or bullying him. however the truth is he is instilling fear through threat or violence. it's plain and simple. terror is fear.

terrorism, as an -ism, is the noun of the same act, except that it's wider on the scale for it includes the political and national sphere.

all in all it's just semantics but nevertheless, know your language.

Olbermann’s Latest Special Comment:

If the video doesn't play, here's the Link

Some noteworthy excerpts from the transcript:

The dictionary definition of the word ‘terrorize' is simple and not open to misinterpretation: "To fill or overpower with terror; terrify; coerce by intimidation or fear." Note please that the words ‘violence' and ‘death' are missing from that definition. For the key to terrorism is not the act-but the fear of the act. That is why bin Laden and his deputies and his imitators are forever putting together videotape statements and releasing virtual infomercials with dire threats and heart-stopping warnings.

But why is the Republican Party imitating them? Bin Laden puts out what amounts to a commercial of fear; the Republicans put out what is unmistakable as a commercial of fear.

The Republicans are paying to have the messages of bin Laden and the others broadcast into your home!

If so, Mr. Bilbray, then what in the hell is your party's new advertisement? And Mr. Hunter? CNN using the film to sell commercials? Commercials? You have adopted bin Laden and Zawahiri as spokesmen for the Republican National Committee.
