Letter from Pat Tillmans brother,
    #6193567 -

Heres the link, it was a good read.

Editor’s note: Kevin Tillman joined the Army with his brother Pat in 2002, and they served together in Iraq and Afghanistan. Pat was killed in Afghanistan on April 22, 2004. Kevin, who was discharged in 2005, has written a powerful, must-read document.

It is Pat’s birthday on November 6, and elections are the day after. It gets me thinking about a conversation I had with Pat before we joined the military. He spoke about the risks with signing the papers. How once we committed, we were at the mercy of the American leadership and the American people. How we could be thrown in a direction not of our volition. How fighting as a soldier would leave us without a voice… until we got out.

Much has happened since we handed over our voice:

Somehow we were sent to invade a nation because it was a direct threat to the American people, or to the world, or harbored terrorists, or was involved in the September 11 attacks, or received weapons-grade uranium from Niger, or had mobile weapons labs, or WMD, or had a need to be liberated, or we needed to establish a democracy, or stop an insurgency, or stop a civil war we created that can’t be called a civil war even though it is. Something like that.

Somehow America has become a country that projects everything that it is not and condemns everything that it is.

Somehow our elected leaders were subverting international law and humanity by setting up secret prisons around the world, secretly kidnapping people, secretly holding them indefinitely, secretly not charging them with anything, secretly torturing them. Somehow that overt policy of torture became the fault of a few “bad apples” in the military.

Somehow back at home, support for the soldiers meant having a five-year-old kindergartener scribble a picture with crayons and send it overseas, or slapping stickers on cars, or lobbying Congress for an extra pad in a helmet. It’s interesting that a soldier on his third or fourth tour should care about a drawing from a five-year-old; or a faded sticker on a car as his friends die around him; or an extra pad in a helmet, as if it will protect him when an IED throws his vehicle 50 feet into the air as his body comes apart and his skin melts to the seat.

Somehow the more soldiers that die, the more legitimate the illegal invasion becomes.

Somehow American leadership, whose only credit is lying to its people and illegally invading a nation, has been allowed to steal the courage, virtue and honor of its soldiers on the ground.

Somehow those afraid to fight an illegal invasion decades ago are allowed to send soldiers to die for an illegal invasion they started.

Somehow faking character, virtue and strength is tolerated.

Somehow profiting from tragedy and horror is tolerated.

Somehow the death of tens, if not hundreds, of thousands of people is tolerated.

Somehow subversion of the Bill of Rights and The Constitution is tolerated.

Somehow suspension of Habeas Corpus is supposed to keep this country safe.

Somehow torture is tolerated.

Somehow lying is tolerated.

Somehow reason is being discarded for faith, dogma, and nonsense.

Somehow American leadership managed to create a more dangerous world.

Somehow a narrative is more important than reality.

Somehow America has become a country that projects everything that it is not and condemns everything that it is.

Somehow the most reasonable, trusted and respected country in the world has become one of the most irrational, belligerent, feared, and distrusted countries in the world.

Somehow being politically informed, diligent, and skeptical has been replaced by apathy through active ignorance.

Somehow the same incompetent, narcissistic, virtueless, vacuous, malicious criminals are still in charge of this country.

Somehow this is tolerated.

Somehow nobody is accountable for this.

In a democracy, the policy of the leaders is the policy of the people. So don’t be shocked when our grandkids bury much of this generation as traitors to the nation, to the world and to humanity. Most likely, they will come to know that “somehow” was nurtured by fear, insecurity and indifference, leaving the country vulnerable to unchecked, unchallenged parasites.

Luckily this country is still a democracy. People still have a voice. People still can take action. It can start after Pat’s birthday.

Brother and Friend of Pat Tillman,

Kevin Tillman

the added insult to injury is that Pat Tillman was killed by friendly fire, not by enemies.

Very good read! It's just sad that for some people it takes someone close to them dying before they see the forest for the trees. There has been enough evidence or non-evidence to prove beyond a doubt iraq was an illegal war and the perpetrators of that war need to be held accountable. Anyone still clinging to the idea this was justified is either ignorant beyond reason or has a personal stake in preventing accountability.

He had all the money, power and fame in the world to do good works. Charities, big brother-type sponsorships, sport camps for disanvantaged youth, etc, etc. Instead he wanted to go play cowboys & indians and got himself killed. What a waste, just for some quasi-political gung-ho idea. Calling him an asshole is a bit much, I admit. But I don't think "hero" fits any better. (And that's how he's portrayed around here in Arizona anyway).

So what does his death have to do with Iraq?

As to the rest of your benighted screed, there was nothing illegal about the invasion of Iraq and there were, and are, damn good reasons for doing it. There are some good reasons for not doing it but they are not enough. I and several others have laid them out for you with a patient, at times, explanation of why they trump the negatives. If you can only see one side of a debate you are half blind. Have another bong hit. (I should have my attorneys sue you for your bicycle for your continued misattribution of my brilliant remark on faggy potheads)

I bet he's also portrayed as a Bush loyalist too, right? That, in spite of the fact that before he was killed, he was looking forward to meeting his hero, Noam Chomsky. Like many people, he was moved by the 9/11 attacks to serve his country and catch the people responsible for the atrocity. The Iraq War had not yet begun when he enlisted, and when he was moved there, he made no secret of his disgust for the war. "Cowboys and Indians" hardly describes his attitude, as you would know if had actually looked into the case.

I have read about it, and heard about it constantly while it was going on. Everyone acted like he was GI damned Joe, real american hero. I just don't agree with that. But I also don't automatically assign hero status to everyone who joines the armed forces. He's a guy who got killed by our own people. Nothing very heroic there. And compared to the good he could have done otherwise, with his money & fame... it's a fucking waste. That's all I meant.

A waste, certainly. I think Tillman's whole family agrees with that. But an asshole, he certainly was not.

The asshole part was because he chose to sign up, whether it was a publicity stunt, whether it was a spur of the moment decision, or whether it was something he agonized over for years.. He could have done a lot more by staying alive (and out of the armed forces). He knew he'd be giving up a lot by signing up. Unless maybe he was hoping to extend his 15 minutes, I don't know. It just smacks of taking for granted everything he had, and that's what rubs me the wrong way.

Normally I keep my peace and let people hero worship all they want, but this case just irks me for some reason. I could probably learn something important if I figured out why.

so by your definition, anyone that joins the military, but could have done something else is an asshole? perhaps you can't see the asshole for the dingleberries.

The Zionists need to join us in Iraq and Afganistan. They are ruthless with the Islamofascists. If we don't stop the Islamists there then the whole world will be just like Iraq and Afganistan and maybe they will win and turn the entire world into an even bigger blood-bath than Saddam Hussein's Iraq.

Since the intellectual bar seems to be set pretty low, I'll go ahead and flex my knees a bit.

I think Pat Tillman is a bit of an asshole for wasting everything he had by joining the military (assuming of course his reasons for signing up really were to "make a difference" or whatever). Most people who join the military are not in that same situation, so no I don't consider them assholes (I don't consider them at all in fact).

And again, joining the armed forces != automatic hero in my book. That's earned, regardless of whether you wear a uniform or not.

Is that sufficiently lucite?

I agree with Redstorm and Kotik.  You're not making sense.

You feel that anyone Patriotic enough to give up a good life to serve his country is an asshole?  Yet "joining the armed forces = automatic hero".

I'm certainly confused.

His death has nothing to do with Iraq. This was just an editor's note providing some background material.

Quote:

Yes, the article laid those damn good reasons out fairly well:

"we were sent to invade a nation because it was a direct threat to the American people, or to the world, or harbored terrorists, or was involved in the September 11 attacks, or received weapons-grade uranium from Niger, or had mobile weapons labs, or WMD, or had a need to be liberated, or we needed to establish a democracy, or stop an insurgency, or stop a civil war we created that can’t be called a civil war even though it is. Something like that."

And the reason keeps changing...

We invaded Iraq because Jesus said, "If you really fuck up the Middle East really bad then I'll come back and magically transport you to heaven where you'll have 72 virgi..I mean, 72 virgin planets to fuck up again and 72 copies of myself will bail you out again. Basically, what I've done is written you a blank check which you can cash over and over- responsibility be damned! Daddy will clean up your mess. Always."
