First Woman To Receive A Bionic Arm
    #6067150 -

http://www.hiptechblog.com/2006/09/15/claudia-mitchell-first-woman-to-receive-a-bionic-arm/

Claudia Mitchell, 26, lost her left arm some time ago from a motorcycle accident. It is a painful experience as she describes how it changed her life, such as having to overcome something as simple as peeling a banana.

Now, her life is getting a dramatic change again, but for the better. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has funded the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago with $50 million and created for Mitchell a “bionic” arm. The arm, wired to her chest muscles’ nerves, is able to react to the muscles’ movement and move like her now-missing limb.

Mitchell can now peel a banana with ease by simply willing her bionic arm to hold the banana. Although she is not the first person to receive a bionic arm, she is very first woman in the world to be granted one.

Right now, Mitchell is preparing for the next “upgrade” of her arm, which adds the ability to “feel”. By wiring to her skin above her left breast, her arm would be able to send signals of “touches” to her brain.

That's amazing.

Here is a video of a prototype bionic arm from 2001: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=2874522845957568852&q=bionic+arm&hl=en

I think it is amazing. That picture right there is a glimpse into the future of medical and technical science!

Just think, 50 years from now you probably won't be able to identify someone with a bionic arm walking down the street.

That is amazing. It reminds me of when Luke gets that bionic hand in Star Wars. And just like in the movie they are going to make her able to "feel" with it. It's crazy when science fiction becomes science fact.

I saw her in an interview on television the other day. It's pretty cool!

They're a little pricey right now at $4 Million, but I imagine the cost will come down. I can still remember when VHS machines were $1,200...

I wonder how she does take a shower? I guess like when you have a cast? Just put a plastic bag over it or stick it out of the shower? Who knows. It's pretty crazy though.

Speaking of technology and what it will be like when we're old, check out the liquid condom. Dude, I'd never trust it, but there you go. http://www.hiptechblog.com/2005/11/28/what-liquid-condom/

Probably. I would also assume that all of the metal parts are titanium and other materials that are rust-proof, and that the electonics are well shielded...

We are, finally, at the beginning of a revolution in both bio-mechanics and genetics/proteomics that are going to allow for truly miraculous solutions to the age-old problems of limb-loss...

Which, I think, is a good thing. It's certainly a better use of technology than SUVs with on-board navigation...

But where will it end? It truly is amazing but imagine the future when they mast bio-mechanics and nano technology... seems like we're getting close to creating walking, talking, feeling robots. 'iRobot' might be the next to become fiction rather than reality.
