Are these almost certainly chanterelles? They're yellow, sort of ruffled flutes in appearance, found around a few trees. Though it looks like they came up straight out of the soil--I thought this species was a woodlover? Any help? Thanks!

You have them. Chanterelles grow from the ground. False Chanterelles sometimes grow from wood.
Happy mushrooming!

False Chanterelles are also called Jack O'Lanterns, They are sometimes known to Glow in the DARK, and are also highly poisonous. You have Chanterelles, Do they smell like Apricots, and TASTE. JUST. AS. NICE?.

Actually, the False Chanterelles I'm referring to are Hygrophoropsis aurantiaca. They sometimes grow from the ground and sometimes from rotting wood.
But Jack O'Lanterns are also close enough in appearance to Chanterelles that they have been mistaken as Chanterelles.
Neither should be eaten.
Happy mushrooming!
