Hello All,

Let's start with a HELLO ALL and a little about me.

First off, I LOVE the shroomery.org, I have visited here once in a while over the years.  Over the last few years, the TEKs have become so easy and in combination with all the posts from each of you, it seems even an idiot can be successful.

I'm very new to growing, but I'm not new to creating "artificial ecosystems" in the home.  I've had a very successful coral reef tank for many years.  Like shrooms, saltwater corals and fish require very specific conditions for growth and success (Temp, Salinity, pH, Calcium, Alkalinity, Ammonia, Nitrites/Nitrates, Phosphates, Water Evaporation, and on and on - all must be checked regularly).  The maintenance for a reef tank for me is easily 10 hours a week, twice a day.

Like shrooms, tanks can get contaminants and even parasites - quarantining and treating fish and coral before adding a new species to one's display tank takes patients and skill to prevent contamination.

Shrooms and tanks are also DIY projects that involve silicone, glass, PVC; all the same stuff as a shroom terrarium.

The biggest difference is the price.  From spores, to glove boxes, to PC cookers, to terrariums; all can be put together for $200-$300.  If your investment becomes contaminated (or you just suck at it), total lose - $200-$300.  Big tanks costs $5000 to start and as it grows, there costs can easily reach $10,000-$50,000.  One case of ICK (a parasite) and all your fish are dead, one power outage lasting over 6 hours, the entire tank could die; total lose - up to $50,000.

So with all the fish experience, I though I might try growing shrooms.

Again, I want to thank this forum and all those who post.  I find forums like this one to be way better than any book.  Where else can you talk to hundreds of other growers with experience?

In the last few months, I have been searching a researching this site and have gotten quite far without posting a question; glove box, terrarium, pressure cooker and all.

I'm waiting for my spore prints from Spore Source to arrive (I haven't gotten a confirmation email yet, but they should have gotten my order by Monday).

While I'm waiting, I thought it was time to test my equipment and ask a few questions.

Hi fromthemoon! Interesting to hear you talk about reef tanks... I know at least myself and another former admin are into aquariums. Unfortunately I can't get a nice setup going until I've settled in one location for a while but I wonder if certain people are naturally inclined to our weird combination of hobbies. Welcome to the site!

Thanks for the warm welcome and opening your community to this newb!

I guess some people have abstract creative brains and others have mathimatical and scientific brains - I have a scientific brain.

The fun of growing coral and keeping fish is more than just having someting "trippy" to look at; half the fun is testing water conditions, hand feeding anemones and start fish, and tweeking the system.

Much of what I have learned by raising corals and fish can be applied to raising shroom.  Patience is key with both hobbies.  It makes sense to be attracted to growing shroom; especially since I love those too :wink:

I also used to be a cook, so I know about contamination, serility, canning/PC use, etc. so those are not totally new concepts.

But...  I am very much a newb when it comes to shrooms (newb alert!), so I'll be counting on the guidence and expertise from everyone here and I travel this new adventure.  You all have already been a BIG BIG help!

When I figure out how to load pics, I'll post a few of my tank.

PS - I'm already addicted to the shroomery.org; it happened while I was still a lurker :smile:

PSS - I wouldn't want to test that "DIY Tank" against a Russian or Chinese homeland assault.

Actually, I think idiots (and pros) can still mess this up, but with all the expert help here it would be hard to not grow at least one good crop.

I remember looking up shroom growing several years ago (at least 3-4) and it look way too hard.  Most of there TEKs seem to start '02 and '03.  Also, there are more people here and much more information to search.

AND...  People here are pretty nice.  Actually, very nice for a forum.  I'm sure there have been some good fights here (and I know people like to argue over which TEKs are best [I don't consider that flaming, more like passion), but I have seen anything really mean.

I guess meaness isn't part of the nature of shroomers.

Woah. I just asked about other corals in your tank in your mushrooms post. You've got a very nice set up and that clam is amazing. What species is it? I'm guessing T. corcea or possibly T. maxima. If that's a maxima then you really know your shit.

Nice to see another aquarium enthusiast on here. I'm a freshwater guy primarily. I do planted tanks (high light, pressurized CO2; the works). Tried the reef thing, not a fan. Although, I do work at a place the imports corals (and some fish) direct from Asia and sells them to pet stores.
