Gonzo’s assistant files suit against the writer’s estate

BY JOEL STONINGTON
Pitkin County Correspondent
June 28, 2006

PITKIN COUNTY — Hunter S. Thompson’s assistant for more than a decade is suing the writer’s estate for unpaid wages in excess of $100,000, according to a lawsuit filed in Pitkin County.

Deborah Fuller — whom Thompson shot and wounded, not seriously, in 2000 when Thompson fired at a bear — worked for Thompson from 1983 through 2004 and lived in a cabin on his property for part of that time.

“Between 1983 and 1996, Ms. Fuller, at Mr. Thompson’s request, agreed to defer some of her wages due to financial difficulties Mr. Thompson was experiencing,” the lawsuit says.

Thompson’s estate is managed by three trustees, with Anita Thompson, Hunter’s widow, as a beneficiary.

“I’m not surprised,” Anita Thompson said. “I do feel sorry for her. I don’t think she’s going to get anywhere with it. These are not Hunter’s intentions. These are things he would be very disappointed in. He would be disgusted. He hated this kind of behavior.”

Anita said he probably would have had a very specific response. “One of his favorite stationaries he would use was from a tabloid,” she said. “Across the top it said, ‘Vultures attack funeral and eat the corpse.’ Hopefully this whole thing will be over soon.”

Thompson shot himself in his home Feb. 20, 2005, following health problems. In August, friends and family held an elaborate private memorial service at his farm. His ashes where shot out of a 15-story cannon in the shape of a two-thumbed fist holding a peyote button.

Fuller is seeking unpaid wages, a civil penalty and attorneys’ fees as judgment from the case. Neither Fuller nor lawyers on either side could be reached for comment.
