Kinda random, but a friend and I are headed south to the okanagan to start picking for awhile as soon as cherry season starts mid July. Osoyoos or Oliver..
I used to live down there and was always told to stay away from the pickers - ha. Gonna meet up with some french friends down there and party for St jean baptiste day...
Anyways, loose plans. Anyone else headed that way?
(perhaps this is better suited to; gathering and travel)

Yeah is that the okanagan (washington) rainbow gathering? I dont really care about the drugs, but meeting people and doing things is pretty fun.
Seems that the colorado national is overlapping with the start of cherry picking -.. not sure what to do about that. I figure i could get to colorodo in 4 days from here, not sure if its worth the travel time.. Maybe if i go a week early. I guess i best buck up with that..
Anyways, about 2.5 hours from Osoyoos in august (around the 14th) is the Komasket music festival just outside of vernon (on the way to salmon arm) and there is lots of free jam/reggae bands for a couple days on an indian reserve. A small festival just starting, but apperently lots of cool people.. and its by donation. However, i think it overlaps with Shambahla..
So, back to fruitpicking - you can find out more info about jobs at the coast and in the okanagan at agri labourpool.com (google it, not sure the exact addy) - Alot of travelling punk kids will probably know a little bit about it too...
Its pretty self explanatory - inform yourself about the farm your at, what your picking, and what the standard rates are. Dont dicker with your employer... getting paid by the hour is best, but piece work is more likely. Working for east indians is typically slave labour (sorry to generalize). Tree crops are nice, cherries are first, Apples are last, plums, nectarines, peaches, and appricots are inbetween. There are also ground crops, which generally suck - bending all day is a pain. Um... For tree crops, look for short tree's where you dont have to use a ladder, and orchards which provide you with a chest mounted bucket... Most orchards will let you camp onsite free of charge and many have small facilities set up for cooking/laundry/showers. Locals treat pickers fairly respectfully as they are at the root of the local economy - hitch hiking is generally easy.
In Oliver there is a picker camp called Loose bay - there is no tree's and it is sandy, ive heard of tents blowing away. Its a large community of mixxed people, 2 bucks a nite and supposedly is getting showers installed.. I would say the benefit of being in camp is that farm workers will drive trucks or busses up and load you in, and pay you cash daily. Picked up from camp.. you just need to be up and ready at 6am. You also risk having your valuables stolen.
You can also wait outfront of the 711 and will often be asked if your looking for work. Its not hard...
Its a good idea to contact a farm ahead of time and feel them out and see how their season is, they'll either reserve you a job, or tell you when to come and hope for the best.
I think thats all i know..
