Direct Connect, by far.
IRC works well.
As does Bitorrent.

I downloaded Limewire recently. I didn't get to use it much because the very next day when my anti-virus/spyware program ran, it deleted all the files, but from what I saw, it was pretty decent.

Didn't I just list 3 programs?

Direct Connect is the best one IMO. The only catch is that you have to share a lot to connect to certain servers. There are share cheats and whatnot so you can connect to all of them, but ya gotta find them.

But for what you're looking for, I'd suggest Limewire.

The programs I listed above are very good for software, games, movies, and music.

Soulseek for electronic music.  They also have other music, but they have all kinds of electronic music, some impossible to find stuff.  And yes there is still a Shroomery chat room.  Soulseek doesn't really have any porn, but that's what bit torrent is for.

I used morpheus last semester and it worked extremely well. it wont work at all this semester for some reason. I use Imesh now. It works pretty good. it's a little tempermental though. I used to use imesh before i used morpheus but it started crapping out so i switched to morpheus. Now i'm back to imesh again. Limewire has never worked for me for some reason.

soulseek for music
dc++ for everything
emule for everything
bittorrent for everything

limewire, kazaa, morpheus, imesh, ares, etc all suck - avoid them.
the above list is all you need (all I ever use is soulseek/nicotine & bittorrent).

Here's my list:

DC++ - I've found everything that I've ever needed using this. The only thing that sucks is that sometimes people disconnect you. Very good for downloading entire albums and programs.
IRC - Usually fast, but sometimes you have to wait in queue. Good for downloading albums
Bitorrent - Usually takes a while to download things and if people stop seeding then you're SOL.
Limewire - Actually has pretty fast downloads. I use it for random songs that I feel like hearing.

I've never even heard of Soulseek, I should check into it. What's so special about it?

http://www.slsknet.org/

originally created by the IDM mailing list several years ago, it probably has the highest percentage of independent music around - lots of rare stuff, instead of the usual RIAA corporate crap (not to mention spyware and viruses and trojans and fake files) that floods the other p2p networks.

not only that, it is a decent & intuitive application.

You have to pay for most of those programs. Morpheus, imesh, limewire, etc are free. So they may suck, but they're free. I find if you download each program you can find the one that works best for you and delete the rest

it's part of the reason that usenet is better, what you DL is generaly what you
get, need somehtng, make a request and in a few hours it's there, the
servers are hundreds of times faster then p2p, I can dl about 500kbps from usenet
with my current connection, one gig in less than an hour
