Iv checked with cd-box edge and both are straight lines, if I understand your answer correctly (I`m not native-english)

look at the 7th square from the right, where the red triangle on top starts. Compare the left over space in that square with the exact same square for the bottom one.

I watched a video on this once... There are a few little pieces that aren't accounted for, but add up to make an entire square.

I must be psychic. I read the thread title on the main page "How can this be true" - not even the part mentioning geometry - and thought of this puzzle. Psychic i'm telling you!

Anyway, the answer is as someone else said that one line is concave and the other convex.

It's a good one though, had me going "Buh?" when I first saw it.

You have to look at the slopes of the red and dark green triangles.

Red slope = 3/8
d.Green slope = 2/5

The slopes are not the same, so the top line can not be straight. As it turns out, the difference in area is exactly 1 unit.

hold a straight edge to both, they are both straight, concave and convex have
nothing to do with the solution. it's really much simpler than that

Dude you can't seriously expect to detect the difference in slopes on a computer screen when the difference is only 0.025 units.

If the slope of the red triangle is 0.375 and the slope of the dark green triangle is 0.4 the line made by the two triangles CAN NOT be straight.


What is your simple solution?

Nope, it's not just an illusion. The green triange slopes down a little steeper than the red one.
Green slope = 2/5 = .4
Red slope = 3/8 = .375

edit: I dunno how a zillion other people posted the answer before me without me seeing.

God damn you bastard you were right it indeed can be checked on the screen (19inch at least) but difference is fukin small. Well, guess you deserve that one shroom ratin... I mean, high rating. Everybody - lets rate this smart fella, give him 5 shrooms!

They're not straight. Print it out, hold the paper horizontally at eye level and sight down the line; you'll see they both bend. One outwardly, one inwardly.

It's a cool trick though.
