I am in a minority on the shroomery, as I frequently defend the opposing side when they have a point about something or when my side make believes something about them.  I also attack my side if I think they're wrong.  People here get very confused by that and think it means I prefer the other side.

I know you're right about that to some extent but i think that sometime in the relative near future the dollar will fall...
Most countries don't want this to happen either but at some point there is no stopping it anymore.

I know they don't seem to care, they aren't the ones that will suffer most if and when things go wrong...

we will have to see how the new chairman of the fed reserve serves us. As long as foreigners are buying property in america and good from america I can't see the value of the dollar slipping beyond the deadline. I am however noe economist, still i rhink we will be fine.

My economics teacher showed my class a documentary called "the day the dollar falls". It was about what was likely to happen with the Dollar in the near future. He said that to most economists it isn't a question of whether or not the dollar will fall but rather a question of when it will fall.

In the documentary there was an interview with some big US economist who used a nice analogy for the approach of the US government to it's debt issues;
"It's like someone jumping off a 100 story building who when he's halfway down says "so far so good."."

you know they have preacehed this doomsday philosophy before, needless to say they a were wrong. Tell me is there nothing that can be done to prevent this impending doom? Isn't it like a game of chess. Isn't everyting like a game of chess?

I am no economist either so i can't really answer that. But if so many people who DO know what they are talking about are saying these things how can they all be wrong.

Another interesting thing about the documentary was that they said that things like this tend to happen to small third world countries but never to a country like the USA. This doesn't mean it isn't happening this time though. They said the US is on a very similar course as some banana republics that have gone 'bankrupt'.

Of course there's something we could do, we could start spending within our means, pay off the debt, and stop inflating the hell out of the dollar. Will we do this? Of course not.

you make it sound so simple and its really not that simple at all.

If It were that fucking simple anybody could run the country.

I think your current president has proven without a doubt that anybody CAN run your country...

So it must really be that simple, but telling people they are going to have to start paying more taxes and spending less isn't as easy as it sounds... It's going to make you very very impopular.

What's complicated about it? It's only complicated to the extent that politicians and bureaucrats allow their own interests and the interests of others to interfere with what they should be doing.

The interest of others is what should they be tending to, thats what politicians do.

this system isn't so flawed that politicians can just do what they want, they wont get re-elected. we are in no real danger of an economy crash.

As I said earlier the ramifications of an American Economic Catastrophe would be felt world wide.

In the long term the fall of the dollar might be a really good thing, change things around a bit. Some change that will hopefully be for the better...

You're nuts if you think that's what politicians do even the majority of the time. Politicians are almost as a rule looking to benefit themselves -- sometimes doing what's right and doing what's in one's best interest are the same thing. More often than not, it seems, they are not.

They can't do anything they want, but they can do a lot of harmful stuff.

I wouldn't be so bold or stupid as to predict such a crash at time x, but the way we're currently doing things simply put cannot go on forever. The United States government is currently insolvent and it is more than a little foolish to look at our tremendous debt and proclaim that everything's fine. The debt combined with the unfunded liabilities of our government (Social Security and to an even greater extent Medicare) will have to be dealt with -- if debt continues to be monetized then you will see depression-era images up close and personal.

Point being? Do you think the wise leaders of our asian creditor nations will, after lending out so much money, put in a conference call to whoever our President at the time is and say "Y'know, you really should stop borrowing so much money and start paying more of what you've already borrowed back; it's not good for you!" Much like before the Great Depression, very few will see such a crash coming if indeed it comes. The voices of those few who do will be drowned out by people such as yourself who laugh off the tinfoil hat doomsday loons and ensure everyone that everything's alright.

you make an argument that the depression is coming again, show me some facts.

I too shall prepare some data stating my position.

Nowhere did I say that depression would come again. I said merely that it *could* come again if we continue on our current path. It is a fact (see, objective) that extremely large debt+exponentially larger unfunded liabilities=serious problems. There are several ways do deal with these problems -- among the options available are: raising taxes, reducing spending, or monetizing the debt (that is, printing more dollars). The nature of these options is such that it is politically far easier to get away with the last option than the first two. Both raising taxes and reducing spending leads to cries of outrage from constituents and political opponents alike, but monetizing the debt is something that hardly anyone even realizes is happening (as it happens at least). Furthermore, the inflationary effects of printing dollars do not occur in full until some time after the dollars are printed (it takes time for money to circulate and for the market to respond). I'm not going to go into an entire economics lesson on booms and busts but suffice it to say, the reason the business cycle (booms and busts) exists is because of the expansion and contraction of the money supply, which is controlled by the federal reserve. This was one of the major causes of the great depression. If you desire I will provide you with links for further research on the topic, I'll stop here though.
