White House Says Iran Could Face Security Council

WASHINGTON, Jan 10 (Reuters) - If Iran continues on its current nuclear course, it will leave the international community no choice but to refer Tehran to the U.N. Security Council for possible actions, the White House said on Tuesday.

The United States was reacting after Iran removed U.N. seals at its Natanz uranium enrichment plant and resumed nuclear fuel research.

"If the regime in Iran continues on the current course and fails to abide by its international obligations there is no other choice but to refer the matter to the Security Council," White House spokesman Scott McClellan said.

If Iran started nuclear enrichment and reprocessing it would be considered a "serious escalation," he said.

Tehran denies wanting nuclear technology for anything but a civilian energy program aimed at satisfying the Islamic republic's booming demand for electricity.

The United States and the European Union doubt that Iran's atomic ambitions are entirely peaceful. If the U.N. Security Council takes up the matter, it could impose economic sanctions.

Several diplomats said the International Atomic Energy Agency's board had received a report on Iran's breaking of seals at three nuclear facilities which had been mothballed under a deal with France, Britain and Germany.

"Any resumption of enrichment and reprocessing activities would be a further violation of Iran's agreement with the Europeans," McClellan said.

"So such steps would be a serious escalation of the nuclear issue by Tehran. There are serious concerns within the international community about the regime's behavior," he said.

McClellan said if Iran mastered the technology of uranium enrichment, it could apply that technology to a covert enrichment program that could be used to manufacture weapons.

"The concern within the international community is well-founded," he said.

European diplomats have said they would seek an emergency meeting of the IAEA to consider referring Iran to the Security Council for failing to allay fears it is seeking a nuclear weapon.

U.S. President George W. Bush early in his administration said Iran was part of an "axis of evil," and more recently called Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad an "odd guy."

Ahmadinejad triggered international condemnation last month for saying the Holocaust was a myth and suggested Israel be moved to Europe.

Back in 2002 Bush told Blair Afghanistan was first, second Iraq, third was "we can talk about that later".

Presumably that was Iran. Looks like he's trying to bullshit his way into another war.

Hearken to me ye bleeding hearts and lefties, I spose the impending doom that Iran represents is all a giant fabrication for the evil American Empire to justify a war that is designed to keep the impending doom from becoming a doomsday event. Oh wait, I mean lets get those fucks before they cause too many problems for us and head off the problem now so as the casualties are lessened by preparation and pre-emptive measures.

I will never agree with Bush on attacking Iraq but I have no problem at all if he attacks Iran. It might even clear his legacy a tad bit, not much, he'll still go down as the shittiest president ever. But Iran IS a threat that needs to be dealt with. I think Bushs plan in Iraq would be perfect for Iran because the Iranians actually want democracy. The crazy muslim jihadist who are in the government are a small fraction of those who actually think like them in Iran. And, yes Israel will deal with Iran if we dont, and they will help us if we do. They want Iran out of their more than Bush does which is somethin to say.

I mentioned this before but I actually know someone living in Iran. He's young and he says the west is right in thinking that most of the youth wants democracy. They love western music like blues and classic rock and they like to drink beer, a crime punishable by up to 10 years hard labor. Unfortunately, he says that an overwhelming majority support everything going on there including the president and most of the laws and punishments even though the west may consider them barbaric.

Now, I am not saying that this dampens any hope for liberalization of Iranian society. Actually, Iranians have a great educational system on par with some western countries and they are fairly well developed for a mideast country. In that light, they may be the most apt for cultural change in the mideast.

the debt is bullshit, none a the countries we owe money to could afford to call in their notes, the collapse of our economy would lead to the collpase of theirs. Its a moot issue.
