bleh, marijuana research paper... (and pictures of naked ladies!!!)
    #4883210 - 11/02/05 10:37 AM (18 years, 5 months ago)

I spose getting extremely high before writing this wasnt the wisest thing to do, it led to careless haste and sloth. at the time, however, i thought being blazed would be the most righteous way to cover such a topic. Anyway, here's draft 1 of 3:

Pro-Legalization of Recreational Marijuana? Because No One Ever Beat Their Kids While High!
-In recent times, marijuana has both become one of the most controversial illegal substances and the most commonly used illegal substance in America. Marijuana is a Schedule 1 controlled substance, listing it in the most potentially dangerous group of scheduled substances with a high risk of ?abuse? (heroin accompanies it in the same schedule grouping): It is illegal to own, possess, grow, consume, etc. without a prescription. While there is a small availability of marijuana and synthetic THC to a select group of cancer and glaucoma patients in select states, its recreational use has remained inappropriately illegal in the United States.
-?Marijuana? is the name most commonly applied to the plant and/or cured buds of the plants cannabis sativa and cannabis indica, although the cured buds have been dubbed a wide range of slang terms: ?weed?, ?grass?, ?green?, ?pot?, ?dope?, etc. (It should be noted that those referring to it as ?dope? are surely not hip and possibly narcotics agents? hey, this is a pro-recreational-use paper!)
-Marijuana contains a fair range of active chemicals, but the most inebriating and legally-observed is delta9-tetrahydrocannibinol, aka THC. Once smoked or eaten, marijuana/THC causes a change in mental perception, with specific effects varying from individual to individual. The most prominent and common effects are laughter, increase in appetite, relaxation/reduction of stress, paranoia, reddening of the eyes (due to pressure reduction in the eyes), etc. It is currently labeled a depressant/psychedelic. Its legal availability is currently isolated to a very select few glaucoma and chemotherapy-receiving patients due to its reduction of eye-tension and its ability to relieve nausea and illicit hunger.
That being said, its original prohibition has roots seeded from racism, fear, and misinformation. Its current prohibition of recreational use is now strongly based upon money, traditionalist officials, fear, and, of course, misinformation (some things never change).
-Marijuana?s original prohibition began in the early 1900?s, roughly around the ?Depression Era?. Its first criminalization votes were based in either state governments that were still highly-church influenced (various Mormons traveled to Mexico, bringing the smokeable plant back to the US with them, which was highly looked down upon via the church), or in states holding tensions against various ethnic groups. Mexican workers hired on by big plantations would commonly smoke the plant, giving reason for smaller farm owners to prefer criminalization of the drug during this time of economic crisis. These were also very race-conscious (or even blatantly racist) times, where Senators would quote "When some beet field peon takes a few traces of this stuff... he thinks he has just been elected president of Mexico, so he starts out to execute all his political enemies,? and "All Mexicans are crazy, and this stuff is what makes them crazy." A newspaper in 1934 editorialized: "Marihuana influences Negroes to look at white people in the eye, step on white men's shadows and look at a white woman twice." It wasn?t long before the drug, which is now criticized for making people lazy and sluggish, was made out by the media through numerous publications as a crime and mania-inducing narcotic that would ?[cause those] under the influence of hashish [to] madly rush at their enemies, and ruthlessly massacre every one within their grasp.? These publications spread massive misinformation through various medias, with possibly the most common being the film ?Reefer Madness?, which portrayed it as a drug with the power to cause massive insanity with one inhale (or ?hit?).
-In more recent times, the media still continues to fuel anti-drug propaganda. Anti-drug commercials and propagandists now concentrate on two main points in regards to marijuana; the tar content of its smoke (its only main health issue), and its inebriating affect. These hardly back any true claims of the legitimacy of it being illegal, considering the plethoric amount of other far more dangerous substances being available over-the-counter. While marijuana smoke does contain some tar content, none of it has been proven cancer-causing, while cigarettes are readily available and contain physically addicting-chemicals and cancer-causing agents. Alcohol causes a greater level of inebriation without laziness and is still legal, despite it being linked to far, far more violent crimes than marijuana (many of marijuana?s violent crimes can actually be linked to ?The War on Drugs? itself, i.e. marijuana-related crimes/killings would significantly reduce with its legalization). One is far more likely to eat junk-food and take a nap on a high dose of marijuana rather than get in a car and drive 70mph in a residential area and kill a pedestrian via vehicular-manslaughter. One has to ask ones? self, ?When was the last time you ever heard of someone smoking a joint and beating their kids??
-Marijuana?s legalization could also prove economically beneficial to America?s economic situation. As with the tobacco tax and the imported alcohol tax, marijuana, considering the fact that it is already widely used, could be taxed to provide additional government income. There is, however, controversy over marijuana potentially proving to be a ?cure? for such a vast variety of ailments that it could potentially bankrupt various pharmaceutical companies.
-In conclusion, marijuana was originally made illegal under unjust circumstances and only continues to remain illegal purely due to misinformation and ignorant traditionalists. (vote democrat if you aint gay)

still needs lotsa work; more published testing results and i need to put in/fix the citations. itll prolly end up being a B considering this is an easy ass community college class... any comments welcome, but if you think it sucks, youre obviously gay; you dont want to be gay, do you? but by all means correct any misinformation i may have provided and if you know any good non-internet sources i can throw in there, please provide linkage.  :stoned:

pubmed is your science for the most current, peer-reviewed research. Since the same info is published in journal format, technically, it isn't "internet based".

Other than that its a matter of sentence structure and semantics...a good start however.

You should add in something about the recent study (I think it was the Journal of Harm Reduction, look it up in the Shroomery news service) that says THC actually prevents lung cancer while nicotine promotes it, and that marijuana is not a major cause for lung cancer.

Oh, and half the people in this country vote Democrat and pot is still illegal. Until Bush, Bill Clinton had the most people jailed for posession in his two terms in US history. One political party won't solve the problem, in fact there are alot of conservatives that also favor legalization.
