Hi... 2 days ago, a buddy of mine pasturized some timothy hay, threw it into some large ziploc bags, poked some holes in it, and dumped a crushed PF cake inside. 2 days later, there is ALOT of new mycelleum growing in there but the bag has a very funky smell to it... kinda sour. THere is no contam. that can be seen with the eye, just white mycelleum that's growing FAST... Is the smell normal? Today, he took another ziploc bag he had prepared 2 days ago, and carefully threw a whole PF cake in, and quickly sealed the bag, then proceeded to crush the cake up inside the bag- thinking that mayve this one won't smell if things kept as sterile as possible... (the second bag does not have holes in it) Peace

Timothy hay is not straw. I don't know what your trying but it sounds like straw tek with hay. I don't think it will work because they are two very different things. For the record- Straw comes from the stalks of grains. Hay is a generally a tall grass that includes leaves, stalks, grain heads. I think hay will just turn into crap once it's boiled and then put into the conditions needed for mushies to grow in. GET SOME STRAW.

Timothy hay is not nearly as bad as alfalfa and some even recommend it but straw is safer. Keep the incubation temperature low for the first few days and letting the bags get some air should help keep things from getting funky.

The mycelleum is growing really fast... and the hay is almost completely covered now... The smell is going away as well- prob. cause of the myc. Wow... colonized the whole bag in 3 days... Impressive. My buddy just got his hands on some straw... He's gonna give that a go as well... Will report on results of both... Peace.

Cool. I would be interested to know if it works. Hay is easier for people to come by. Keep me posted please.
