I got my "pre-sterilized" rye berries from Dung Brothers (Fungal Fever) about three days ago. There are a number of the berries that have a light green and or blackish look to them... is this normal/expected and will be OK to inoculate? Or should I not risk it? Please help a impatient newbie who cant wait to inoculate!?!?!

DB rye berries are not very reliable, more than half of them that I got were contamed. One time all of them were.

I do hope they (DB) read this and try to remedy the way they send and/or sterilize their berries so that they dont get contaminated in transport. I (dont ask why) really like the idea of being able to skip that particular step in the process of cultivation.

I just got word from DB there is a problem with some of the grain bags sent out the last month. Apparently the grain had a very high concentration of bacteria and the bags turn green after inoculated or if they sit to long. Some of them turn grey. Either way...there is a problem and he just realized it this week. Unfortunatly some orders were already sent out. If you think you got bad rye bags, just send DB a snail mail with your kit #, name/addy and he'll send you new ones. I'm going to have a talk with him about perhaps sending a free spore syringe or something for the problem. Anyway, DB is handling this problem so send all requests to him snail mail not to me email. thanks

Rye can sometimes be "touchy" Some companies have rye shipped from all over North America. I know companies here (East Coast) that get their rye only a few miles away to as far as Canada. The odd thing is that the price is about the same? Also with quick changes in tempertures and delays in the mail lately, it doesn't surprise me that a bad batch went out. I hope that people understand that when you're shipping live biological matter, there's always a chance that something will "go a rye" .... bad joke:) Lana

Ever had rye bread? What about wheat bread? these 2 substances are clearly not the same. I have heard that wheat berries will work, but personally have never seen it done.

I've done at least 1,000 qts of wheat, some people recommend presteeping, it does tend to clump a little if you don't, but I still have no problems, and it costs $6 for 50lb's at the feed store, rye is a little more expensive, it costs $7.50 for 50lb's. Is dimitri's rye organic, or is it $7 for 50lbs feed store rye?
